Iowa finishes 2nd at USGA Men's State Team
Balanced team effort leads to best ever finish

The Iowa trio of Gene Elliott, Jon Olson and Denny Bull teamed to finish in second place at the 2012 USGA Men's State Team Championship held at Galloway National Golf Club just outside of Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was the best finish for the state of Iowa, besting the 10th place finish posted by the 2001 team.
The USGA State Team Championship was first played in 1995. Teams from the U. S. States and Territories are represented by three man teams. Two out of three scores are counted in each round to determine each team’s total.
The scoring was balanced for the Iowa squad, throwing out a different player's score each round. Olson posted the best individual finish of the three, finishing in a tie for 4th after rounds of 70-75-73--218. Elliott posted 74-72-84--230 while Bull managed 79-70-75--224. This led the team to a total score of 8-over 434. They finished six shots behind the New York squad.
The 2014 USGA Men's State Team will be held at the French Lick Resort in French Lick, Indiana. Next year's USGA Women's State Team will be at NCR Country Club in Ohio.
