Phyllis Otto Germain

At only 12 years old, Phyllis Germain  won the Atlantic City women’s title, kicking off a incredible career, including making the championship flight of the Iowa Women’s Amateur that year.  Three summer’s later, in 1940, she won the first of her three Iowa Women’s Amateur titles at the Wakonda Club in Des Moines.  She was 15 years old and about to enter her junior year of high school.  She also won in 1942 and 1952 at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club.  Her career included a breathtaking victory over the legendary Babe Didrikson Zaharias in the 1945 Women’s Western Amateur.  That victory qualified her for the 1946 Curtis Cup, but the competition was not held because of the war.  She attended Northwestern University, winning the national collegiate women’s championship in 1946.  Among her other victories was the Western Senior Championship in 1981.
