36 IGA Women’s Match Play The Preserve on Rathbun Lake, Moravia June 27-29 Sydney Eaton, of Mason City, defeated Tenley Moretti, of Ankeny, to win the 7th IGA Women’s Match Play Championship. Eaton, who plays collegiately at Northern Iowa, earned a hard fought 3 & 2 victory over Moretti in the final match at The Preserve on Rathbun Lake. Eaton, who earned the 2 seed after a qualifying even-par 72, advanced to the finals with a decisive 9 & 7 win over Michelle Klein, of Jesup, and then a narrow victory over Karli Kerrigan, of Ankeny, in 19 holes. Eaton had just completed her freshman season at UNI before her run at The Preserve. She made six starts for the Panthers, which included 14 rounds in the 70s. She placed sixth individually at the Drake Bulldog Invita- tional late in the year, perhaps indicating what was to come in the summer months. Moretti’s path to the finals included a 3 & 2 win over Brooke Newell, of Anita, in the quarterfinals and a 2 & 1 win over Samantha Knight of Onawa in the semis. Knight was the stroke play medalist, firing a 1-under par 71 in qualifying, while Moretti was the 4 seed. She posted a 3-over par 75 in qualifying. While Moretti has not won the match play, she has had an excellent run the last two years. She has made the finals both times, losing the 2017 championship match to Emily Snelling, of Clear Lake, by an identical 3 & 2 margin. Moretti, who had just finished up her senior year at Ankeny Centennial High School, has now begun her freshman campaign on the Iowa State golf team. The victory at the Match Play was the crowning achievement for Eaton on her way to earning the IGA Wom- en’s Player of the Year award.
