2018 Yearbook
64 U.S. Open Local Qualifier Glen Oaks CC, W. Des Moines May 14 A total of four players survived and advanced at the 2018 U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Glen Oaks Country Club, West Des Moines, on May 14. Professional Sean McCarty, of Solon, earned medalist honors with an impressive 67 (-4) on the day. McCarty, following his round, commented that he was pleased with his game and how he was able to handle the green surfaces at Glen Oaks CC. “I drove the ball good today,” McCarty said. “I kept it in play and out here you have to stay below the hole. The greens were slippery; you had to be careful out there. The rough was thick. If you weren’t driving it well, you’d have a long day. It was a great day to play with the wind being down.” McCarty’s round included five birdies and just a lone bogey, which he admitted was due to a three putt. “I only did that once,” McCarty said. “Which is good out here with those slick greens.” Amateur Dennis Bull, who turned in 32 (-3) on the front nine, played even on the way in to grab a spot into the Sectional Qualifying with a 68 (-3). Also qualifying into Sectional Qualifying were ama- teur Lucas Scherf and professional Zach Steffen, both shooting 69 (-2) on the day. Andrew Huseman was 1st Alternate after posting 71 (E), while Jake Marvelli, 72 (+1), won a four-way playoff on the first playoff hole to secure the 2nd Alternate spot. In addition to the four who qualified at Glen Oaks CC, an additional seven players with ties to Iowa either advanced from other qualifiers around the country or were exempt into Sectional Qualifying. Unfortunately none of those 11 was able to punch their ticket to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, site of the 2018 U.S Open.
