66 U.S. Junior Am Sectional Qualifier Cedar Rapids CC, Cedar Rapids June 18 Lefty Jake Marvelli, of Indianola, fired a steady one-over-par 73 on a tough Cedar Rapids CC layout to grab the only qualifying spot for the U. S. Junior Amateur Championship. He edged out Michael Winslow of Overland Park, Kan. and Will Babcock of Panora by one stroke. His play earned him a trip to legendary Baltusrol Country Club in New Jersey. Marvelli carded two birdies against three bogies while piling up 13 pars on his way to qualifying. He capped his round with a birdie on the very difficult par-4 13th hole and five straight pars. At Baltusrol Jake was very much in contention to make the 64-player match play field after an opening round of two-over-par 72. But a pair of double bogies in round two, including a four-putt on the par- five 11th hole, resulted in a 78 and two strokes out of the playoff for the final match play spots. The 18-year-old played well enough throughout the year to earn the IGA’s Junior Boys’ Player of the Year award. He enrolled at Middle Tennessee University and moved right into the starting lineup for the Blue Raiders in the fall.
