69 U.S. Mid-Am Sectional Qualifier Otter Creek GC, Ankeny August 13 Five of Iowa’s most prominent champions, who hold a vast array of titles, were joined by a recently re- located University of Iowa graduate student, to represent Iowa in the field of 264 players at Charlotte Country Club & Carolina Golf Club for the 38th U. S. Mid-Amateur Championship. 35 players competed for one qualifying spot into the 2018 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship on Mon- day, August 13th at Otter Creek Golf Club in Ankeny, Iowa. Players played 18 holes at Otter Creek, with only one qualifier moving on to the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship to compete along side fellow exempt Iowan’s Gene Elliott and Mike McCoy in Charlotte, North Carolina. J.D. Anderson came up on top to grab the spot. His round included five birdies against just one bo- gey for a score of 67 (-4). The Iowa six: • J.D. Anderson (Johnston) – Medalist at Otter Creek GC in Ankeny with 67 (-4) • Joe Palmer (WDM) – First Alternate at Otter Creek with 68 (-4), added to field • Nate Dunn (Cedar Rapids) – Co-Medalist, Stillwater, Minn. qualifier with 70 (-2) • Mike McCoy (Norwalk) – Exempt, 2013 U.S. Mid-Am Champion • Gene Elliott (WDM) – Exempt, Top 400 World Amateur Golf Rankings • Kyle Davies (Iowa City) – Medalist at Metamora (Ill.) Fields GC with 68 (-3) Five of the six Iowa representatives struggled in the 36-hole stroke play qualifying to determine the 64 players who would advance to match play. McCoy (+9), Elliot (+10), Anderson (+12), Palmer (+16) and Dunn (+17) all fell well short of the playoff which was at +5. Kyle Davies, who recently moved to Iowa City from Sacramento, Calif., posted rounds of 69-73 to enter the match play at the #17 seed. He was a 2-up winner over Jacob Koppenberg of Bellingham, Wash. in the first round. In the round of 32 he took on the 2016 Mid-Am Champion Stewart Hagestad of Newport Beach, Calif. and fell by a 3 & 2 margin. Qualifying Results (Par-71) J.D.
