71 Tri-State Masters The Classic Elmwood CC, Mashalltown April 27-28 Sioux City Area Courses May 17-19 *Excerpt taken from Sioux City Journal by Barry Poe* SIOUX CITY – It took a monumental collapse for it to happen, but Adam Fields achieved a rare and coveted feat at Green Valley Golf Club. The 30-year-old Sioux City native and Pottawattamie County sheriff’s deputy came from behind to win the Tri- State Masters by one shot and complete a career grand slam of “major” golf titles. Fields, who bested Corey Matthey by a stroke, added the Tri-State crown to his Men’s City (2009) ,three River-Cade Amateur (2013-14-15) and Interstate Amateur (2016) victories. “It’s a lot to sit on an eight-shot lead, especially in the first tournament of the year and the fact that he had never played any of these courses before,” Fields said. “We were even already after nine holes and it really made it a big deal be- cause I felt like I didn’t have to be as aggressive then. It’s good to win this one, I’ve never won it before. It’s the last one for me to win and it’s been kind of a weird one to figure out for me.” Adam Fields Corey Matthey Chris Rager Ryan Anema Sam Pieczynski +4 +5 +7 +7 +7 1 2 T3 T3 T3 219 220 222 222 222 Open Senior 1 2 Jeff Donaldson Bill Mathers +6 +14 221 229 Scot Cook Dustin Atkinson Ethan Mechling Jeff Collett 83 76 76 76 1 T2 T2 T2 Points Open Division Senior Division 1 2 Jon Brown Ron Peterson 78 77 Scot Cook (Open Division) and Jon Brown (Senior Division), both of Clive, took home the titles from the inaugural ‘The Classic’ held at Elmwood Country Club, in Marshalltown. The Classic is the first Iowa Golf Association point event played under a modified stableford format in which play- ers earn points per hole based on their score. Cook, posted rounds of 42 and 41 points, respectively to outdistance a trio that in- cluded Dustin Atkinson, Ethan Mechling and Jeff Col- lett, who all finished seven points behind Cook. Over the two-day event, Cook made 10 birdies. Atkinson, who would start the final round with four birdies in his first 11 holes, tried to put some heat on Cook but to no avail. Mechling and Collett, who both made their share of birdies over the two-day event, found themselves treading water in the second round without much success of putting any pressure on Cook and his lead. Jon Brown (78 points), playing in his first Senior Division event after turning 50 last fall, edged Ron Peterson by a single point to capture the title. Brown also made 10 birdies on the weekend, including three in a row to finish his first round. Peterson made a total of seven birdies on the weekend, including his own three in a row to finish the opening round. Brown’s back and forth final round included three birdies over a five-hole stretch that proved to be the difference. Rob Christensen, an Elmwood member, finished in third place in the Senior Division, seven points back of Brown’s total. Rounding out the top five finishers were Dave Gaer (68 points) and Dave Henry (66 points).
