2018 Yearbook
72 Carroll Amateur Southeast Iowa Am The Preserve on Rathbun Lake, Moravia May 18-19 It was a family affair at this year’s Southeast Iowa Amateur. While Willis Gaer of Des Moines ran away with the Open Division title by 10 shots, his father, Dave charged to the win in the Senior Division after trailing by two going into the final round at The Preserve on Rathbun Lake. Willis, who opened with a pair of 68s, finished with a tournament record 170 (-10) after the 45 hole event. He made 10 birdies and a pair of eagles to outdistance Patrick Hall and Pedro Velasco, who finished second and third respec- tively. What seemed to make the difference was Gaer’s stellar play on the par fives. The Eastern Kentucky sophomore was able to birdie or eagle 11 of the 13 he would play. In the Senior Division, Dave Gaer posted a pair of 69s, including a sizzling 31 on the back nine in the second round to edge opening round leader Joe Bates by two strokes. The elder Gaer finished with a total of 9 birdies over 36 holes to take the victory. This is the second consecutive year that Bates had finished runner-up. In the Super Senior Division, Jim Campbell posted rounds of 70-78, good for a four shot victory over Del Harken and Tim Taylor. Carroll CC, Carroll June 8-9 It was another exciting finish this year at the 2018 Carroll Amateur. Wes Buntenbach of Clarion and J.D. Anderson of Johnston, overcame multiple shot defi- cits to get themselves into a playoff for the title. Buntenbach, known for his strength and power has begun to make a name for himself as he has consis- tently been near the top of the leaderboard week in and week out. The final round was shortened to nine holes due to weather. The remaining players who made the cut would play the front nine, which was a par 37. Bun- tenbach shot a blistering 32 (-5), while Anderson shot 33 (-4). The two were able to surge past the second round leaders who found it difficult to hold off their late charge. Buntenbach and Anderson finished the tournament at 177 (-2). They cleared Gene Elliott by a shot after he turned in an even par score of 37. The two would playoff to determine the champion, where ultimately Buntenbach came through for the win.
