74 Waterloo Open Iowa Masters Gene Elliott of West Des Moines shot a final round 69 (-3) to capture his fourth Iowa Masters title at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames Iowa. Elliott made a timely eagle on the final hole to win outright by one over Wes Buntenbach of Clarion. Entering the final round Elliott and two other players trailed just a shot behind leaders Sam Zoske of Mar- shalltown, Jon Brown of Adel and Wes Buntenbach of Clarion who sat at three under total. Elliott being in the second to last group was able to strike first with an eagle on the last. He reclaimed the lead and extended it by two. Buntenbach only having one hole left to play gave it a good effort but was un- able to match and would have to settle for a birdie, thus securing the win for Elliott. Ron Peterson of Urbandale continued his impres- sive play with a win in the Senior Division. He shot rounds of 67-72-74 for a total of 213 (-3). He would win by one over Dave Henry of West Des Moines who shot steady rounds of 72-72-70. During his round of 67, Ron birdied six out of seven holes starting at the 8th and ending at the 14th. In the Super Senior Division Jim Curell from Boone would go on to win after shooting rounds of 74-77 - 151 (+7). He would win by one over Dave Sergeant of Fort Dodge. Jake Calhoun of West Des Moines made an impressive showing for the Dowling Catholic High School Junior to be. He shot rounds of 71-71-72 for a total of 214 (-2) to win the Junior Division and finish 3rd in the Open Division. Veenker Memorial GC, Ames July 13-15 Open Division: Gene Elliott - W. However, the former Division II golfer at Malone University in Canton, Ohio, never wavered. Schem- bechler’s persistence paid off as a strong back nine surged him past Preston Valder, the golfer he shared the 36-hole lead with, and to the Waterloo Open Professional Division championship. A final-round 67 carried Schembechler to 20-under, good enough to beat Valder by one stroke for the $50,000 first-place payday. Among the amateurs, Dusty Drenth’s lead had dwindled from eight shots to two. And there were still four holes remaining, including a pair of chal- lenging par-3s. But Davenport’s Drenth, second, third, fourth and fourth in previous Waterloo Open Amateur appear- ances, wasn’t about to crumble under pressure. Or relinquish the lead. Drenth responded with a birdie on No. 15 and an eagle on 16 to capture his first championship in this event. His 4-under par 68 in the final round at Irv Warren Golf Course put him at 11-under for the tournament, four shots better than runner-up Dylan Daxon, who shot a blistering 8-under 64.
