77 North Iowa Amateur Briarwood Amateur J.D. Anderson, who also won the 2017 edition, took the trophy home for the second year in a row at the Briarwood Amateur. Anderson, of Johnston, posted scores of 68-72 (-4), won the Open Division by five shots over Ryan Horner, of Waukee, who posted con- sistent rounds of 72-73 (+1). Anderson made a total of eight birdies and an eagle over the two-day event. Tying for third place at 146 (+2) in the Open Division were Brian Allison (Norwalk) and Scot Cook (Clive). The Senior Division of the 2018 Briarwood Amateur saw a total of six players break par over 36 holes. Newton’s Todd Rose put together a pair of 68s to post 136 (-8) and win the division by a single shot over Des Moines’ Dave Gaer. Those finishing the event under par included Mike Lathrop (-4), Sam Billmeyer (-3), Brian Verduyn (-2) and Jon Brown (-1). Dave Studer, of West Des Moines, finished with rounds of 72-76 (+4) and captured the Super Senior Division by a shot over Randy Studer, of West Des Moines, and Wes Hogeland, of Pierson. The inaugural North Iowa Amateur was contested at Mason City Country Club, Saturday and Sunday, September 1st and 2nd. The tournament would eventually be shortened to a single round due to heavy rain that caused unplayable conditions. In the Open Division, Nate McCoy of Ankeny opened up a scorching 63 (-9). McCoy had become a reinstated amateur just prior to the event and he was looking to get his feet wet. The 28-year-old not only got his feet wet but he jumped right in. He would go on to make eight birdies and an eagle to take the first round lead and eventual title. His only blemish was a single bogey on the drivable par 4, #13 after hitting his tee shot behind a tree. McCoy said he had good memories about Mason City Country Club after winning the individual Class 4A State Championship there in 2007. In the Senior Division Bob Brooks of West Des Moines took the title after shooting an impressive 66 (-6). He managed to string six birdies together on the front nine between holes #2 and #7 to shoot 30 on the par 36. He would go on to play the back nine at even par with one birdie and one bogey. Runner-up, was Joe Palmer of West Des Moines finishing with a 69 (-3). He would beat out Rob Dickerman of Marion and local Joel Yunek by a shot after they finished with 70 (-2). Jim Campbell from Albia, won by a large margin in the Super Senior Division after he shot 65 (-7). Jim would make eight birdies and one bogey to end the season on top. He took the title by four over Harrold Hickman of Mason City and Rich- ard Gorbell of Cedar Falls after they shot 69, 70 respectfully.
