18 | IGA SENIOR MATCH PLAY G ene Elliott, Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member of West Des Moines, captured his fourth IGA Senior Match Play crown in 2019. He defeated Terry Cook of West Des Moines 3 & 2 in the championship match. Elliott jumpedout toanearly lead inthechampionship match and found himself 5 up thru 7. Cook battled back by winning the 8th, 12th, and 14th holes but in the end, Elliott was just too much. En route to the finals, Elliott took down #1 seed Tony Newkirk of Pleasant Hill, by a margin of 5 & 4. Cook outlasted Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Jon Brown of Adel in his semifinal match. It was a tilt that came down to the wire. After finishing tied thru 18, Cook made a biride on the first extra hole, sending him on to face Elliott in the title match. Steve Kahler of Marion claimed the championship in the Super Senior Division. He knocked off Mark Hogenson of Cedar Rapids in the championship match 2 & 1. Kahler got out to an early lead by winning the first two holes, but Hogenson made a charge, winning 14 and 15 to get within one. Kahler withstood Hogenson’s comeback with a birdie on the 17th to take the match. Weather played a big factor throughout the event. Heavy spring rains forced the championship to delay it's start by 1/2 a day, meaning that the format was altered so that only the top 16 would make up the championship bracket, rather than 32. The next 16 competitors made up the President's bracket, where Matt Weresh would be crowned champion.
