50 | DIRECTOR’S CUP MATCHES T eam Iowa brought home the hardware from the 2019 Director's Cup, conducted at St. Joseph's Country Club in Country Club Village, Missouri. Iowa fielded a strong team, including Brian Allison, of Norwalk, Dennis Bull, also of Norwalk, J.D. Anderson, of Johnston, Scot Cook, of Van Meter, Ankeny's Nate McCoy and Jon Olson. This year's victory was Iowa's third in the events history, and first since 2011. The Director's Cup began in 2000, and is a biennial competition that rotates sites each year. The goodwill matches include four-ball, foursomes, and singles matches between teams from Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri. Iowa took a commanding lead on the first day, earning 16 of a possible 18 points. The morning round was a four-ball format, of which Iowa won all three matches. The team of McCoy & Olson defeated Kansas 2 & 1, closing the match with a birdie on the seventeenth. Allison & Bull also rolled, winning 4 & 2. Anderson & Cook were all square with their opponents after the front nine, but stepped on the gas and won their match 2 & 1. The afternoon consisted of foursomes (alternate shot) matches, with Iowa claiming all three once again. The duo of Allison & McCoy sat all square through the front nine, but won holes 10-13 on the back and went on to win their match 4 & 3. The team of Bull & Cook dominated, securing their victory 6 & 5. Olson & Anderson played steadily, winning their match 4 & 2. Scoring was Nassau format with 3 points being available in each match (1 pt for Front 9, 1 pt for Back 9, and 1 pt for Total 18). The big lead proved valuable as the final day wasn't quite as dominant as day one. In Singles Matches, Allison and Olson were the only Iowans able to grind out victories. Allison stood square with his opponent through nine, but won three holes during a four hole stretch on the back nine to win the match 3 & 2. Olson won an exciting match, which included only five halved holes and went all the way to the eighteenth. Olson held on to win the match 2 up. While Iowa did not take the bulk of the singles matches, their eight point cushion over the field was plenty to seal the deal, and secure the 2019 Director's Cup title. ST. JOSEPH COUNTRY CLUB, ST.
