JUNIOR GIRLS’ 4-STATE K ansas went wire-to-wire at the 52nd Junior Girls’ 4-State Championship, capturing their first title since 2002 at the Country Club of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. The Junior Girls’ 4-State Championship is a goodwill match where six girls and two coaches represent each state. The format of the event was updated in 2019 and now consists of three sessions of match play rather than two rounds of stroke play. The first day of play features foursomes matches in the morning, followed by four-ball matches in the afternoon. The final day of play is played in a singles format. In the course of the opening foursomes matches, Kansas got off to an early lead after accumulating 3.5 points. Ellie Braksiek / Lauren Sease put Iowa on the board with their 3 & 1 victory. Kaitlyn Hanna / Nicole Kolbas halved their match to propel Iowa into second place, tallying 1.5 points for the foursomes matches. Both Missouri and Nebraska earned 1 point to position themselves in a tie for third place. Kansas continued their strong play in the afternoon’s four-ball matches, racking up 2 points to extend their lead to 1.5 points. Anna Jensen / Lauren Sease defeated their opponents 3 & 2, in addition to Ellie Braksiek / Britta Snyder halving their match to give Iowa 1.5 points in the afternoon session. Nebraska picked up 1.5 points and 1 point respectively to settle into third place. Missouri tallied one additional point, putting them 2.5 points back heading into the final day of play. During the final day of play, Kansas tallied 3.5 points in the singles matches for a two-day tally of 8 points, finishing two points clear of the field to earn the 52nd Junior Girls’ 4-State Championship title. Nebraska won three singles matches and halved another to earn 3.5 points for a final score of 6 points to finish runner- up. Iowa’s Britta Snyder and Anna Jensen, of Ames and Dubuque respectively, won their singles matches to secure a tie for third place finish with Missouri at a final tally of 5 points.
