IOWA CUP MATCHES T he Iowa Cup was first held in 1968, in what was then a stroke play event featuring teams from the Iowa Section PGA and Iowa Golf Association. The amateurs would capture the cup that year at Des Moines Golf & Country Club by a one-shot margin. This year the 53rd Iowa Cup was contested at Briarwood Golf Club in Ankeny, featuring a match play, Ryder Cup style format. Jim Curell was name the Honorary Captain of the Iowa Golf Association team but was represented by Tom Schill due to his passing in April of 2020. The IGA team featured J.D. Anderson, Kevin Ault, Jon Brown, David Combs, Terry Cook, Dusty Drenth, Gene Elliott, Ben Epperly, Charlie Hoyle, Andrew Huseman, Trent Lindenman, Nate McCoy, Tony Newkirk, Jon Olson, Joe Palmer, Connor Peck, Ron Peterson, Captain Tom Schill, Logan Schweinefus, and Nate Vance. The Iowa Section PGA developed an early lead, accumulating 7.5 points during the opening day’s four-ball matches. The Iowa Golf Association’s team earned 2.5 points during the morning session, with Ben Epperly / Logan Schweinefus and Trent Lindenman / Joe Palmer claiming the two lone victories for the amateurs. The momentum shifted during the foursomes matches later that afternoon, with the Iowa Golf Association winning five matches and accumulating 5.5 points for a total of eight for the day. The sides of Terry Cook / Tony Newkirk, Gene Elliott / Trent Lindeman, Kevin Ault / Andrew Huseman, David Combs / Dustry Drenth, and Charlie Hoyle / Nate McCoy all dispatched their opponents. The Iowa Section PGA earned 4.5 points in the afternoon for a total of 12 points on the day. The Iowa Golf Association faced a four point deficit heading into the final day’s singles matches. Despite a valiant effort, the Iowa PGA Section secured 11 points (compared to nine for the IGA) during the final matches to win by a 23-17 margin.
