100 A n opening day 69 (-3) provided just enough cushion for Clive resident Jake Weissenburger to capture back- to-back titles at the Lake Creek Amateur played over the Memorial Day Weekend at Buena Vista University Golf Course at Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake. Players’ battled through windy conditions in the opening round, culminating with Weissenburger holding a two-shot lead over Nate McCoy and Grant Smith. Storm Laker Aaron Clausen, who won the 2022 Lake Creek Amateur, sat in fourth place at 1-over par. In the final round, McCoy proved to be Weissenburger's biggest challenger. After a birdie at 16, he then made a crucial par putt on 17. With a three-putt from Weissenburger, McCoy now had a chance on the final hole. Weissenburger would play the 18th hole as a champion should, hitting his approach to 15 feet, applying the pressure back on his challenger. McCoy was faced with a must make putt from the fringe that came up inches short, giving Weissenburger the well-deserved victory. Smith and Clausen each carded 73s on the final day to capture third and fourth place, respectively. In Senior Division Bill Matzdorff edged Kirk Macumber on the opening playoff hole for the title. Both men shot 72-71 on the weekend, good for a 1-under par total. Defending champion Bret Taylor and Ron Peterson were one shot back at even par. Joel Yunek bettered defending champion Bob Brooks in a playoff in the Super Senior Division. Yunek and Brooks, the 2023 IGA Super Senior Men’s Player of the Year, finished the two-day event at five-over, bettering Tom Schill, and Jeff Opheim, of Austin, Texas, who took third and fourth place, respectively.
