Epperly makes Match Play at U.S. Junior Amateur
Thirty-one juniors battled the heat and tests of Coldwater
Golf Links at the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur Sectional
Qualifier. After 36-holes of competition, West Des Moines’
Ben Epperly (74-73) and Nick Pittman (69-78) of Urbandale
were knotted up at five-over par, 147. With a bogey on the
first playoff hole, Epperly punched his ticket to the 2016 U.S.
Junior Amateur Championship.
Pittman made a clutch birdie on the par-4, 15th-hole of his
second round to move into a tie for first, and ultimately
sending the tournament into a playoff. He will be the first-
alternate from the Ames sectional qualifier. Frank Lindwall,
who has committed to play college golf at Iowa State, fired
rounds of 71-77 to finish as the second-alternate.
The U.S. Junior Am was held at The Honors Course in
Ooltewah, Tenn. This course has also played host to the
U.S. Amateur, U.S. Womens’ Amateur, the Curtis Cup, and
multiple NCAA Championships.
Epperly opened with a 1-under par 71 in qualifying and
followed it with a 79 on day two to ultimately earn the #53
seed in the match play draw. He lost a tightly contested
match 1 up in his
opening round of the
championship to John Pak
of Scotch Plains, N.J.
