A

fter years of coming close J. D. Anderson was a popular victor when he claimed his first IGA

individual title at the 32nd Iowa Mid-Amateur at Beaver Hills Country Club in Cedar Falls.

J. D. is one of the most consistent competitors on the Iowa circuit and has finished runner-up

twice in the Mid-Am and twice in the IGA Match Play. He has finished in the top five of the

IGA Player of the Year list nine times in the last fifteen years, never lower than thirteenth.

Anderson of Johnston, holed out for eagle on the second and birdied the third, to pull away

early in the second round. His goal was to stay aggressive, and he notched four more birdies for

a round of 67 (-5) and a 138two-day total (-6), to win by four.

“This means a lot,” Anderson said. “I am really happy. I had a lot more nerves today than I

expected, because of what it meant. The bigger goal is to win all three IGA Majors, the Mid-

Am, Match Play and Iowa Amateur.”

Anderson said his quick start to the round helped calm him early on: “I was forced to lay up

on two and then holed out,” Anderson said. “Then I made a 15-foot putt on three and that

settled the nerves. It was a solid day. I got away with some bad shots. My main focus was to

stay aggressive. I assumed someone from behind was keeping pace, so I wanted to keep making

birdies.

Anderson, who assumed another ‘low’ round was out there in a group ahead of him, was right.

Dusty Drenth (Davenport) put together his own magic, firing a tournament low 66 (-6), but

Anderson was too far ahead. Drenth was able to birdie three of the four par 5s which was three

better than the previous round. He got hot during the middle of the round making birdies on

6, 7, 9, 10 , 11 with two more on 15 and 18. His lone bogey came at the downhill par 3, 17th

which was the only blemish of the day. Drenth's two day total of 142 (-2) placed him in 2nd,

four shots back.
