Andrew Wood battled back to win the 2017 Iowa Junior Amateur Championship. The 18-year old
from Marion shot a final round 74 at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames to best first round leader Jake
Marvelli by a single shot.
Marvelli, 17, of Indianola, shot an opening round even-par 71 while Wood fashioned an opening 75.
And while Wood got off to a hot start in round two, birdieing the first two holes, Marvelli suffered a
triple bogey on the second hole. That swing gave Wood the lead that he would not relinquish.
In the 14 to 15 age division, Cole Davis of Marshalltown defeated Connor Van Weelden of Ames in a
playoff. Davis, 15, shot rounds of 74-75 while Van Weeldon, 15, fired 73-76.
Davis’ final round 75 was especially impressive when you consider the poor start he had to the day. He
made a triple-bogey (7) on the opening hole then made bogeys at 2 and 4 before a birdie at 5 got him
settled. He would play the next eleven holes in two-under before a pair of bogeys to finish the round.
In the youngest age division, 11 and under, the players only play 9 holes. Evan Smith, 11, of Knoxville
captured the trophy with a very impressive 42 over the front 9. Gavin Drake of Urbandale, at age 9, was
runner-up with a 60.
