“On the first 12 holes I could not make a putt,” Brown
said. “So on the 13th, I switched to cross handed.”
Bold move. Did it pay off? Yes.
“I one-putted in. Every green,” Brown said. “I found a
little something there. The conditions were so tough, it
was a truly a grind. This feels great (to win).”
Brown, who had back surgery in October of 2014,
commented that it’s been a long recovery.
“I probably will never be back to a true 100 percent,”
Brown said. “But my strength is back, but was it tough
when it’s cold and wet, like it was these last few days. I
was able to hang in there.”
Finishing just a stroke out of the playoff included a trio
of players - Jon Olson, McCoy and Gene Elliott. Olson
shot the lowest final round in the Mid-Am Division
with a 71 (+1). Olson was going for his third straight
win at the Iowa Mid-Amateur.
First round leader Josh Black finished 7th after a tough
finish on Saturday (80).
In the Senior Division, Ron Peterson, of Urbandale,
posted an even par round to out distance Clive’s
Matt Weresh by three strokes. Peterson finished the
tournament at 141 (+1). Marshalltown’s Matt Steddom
was four off Peterson’s pace.
Peterson’s final round included five birdies in the
tough playing conditions.
