IGA FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Spirit Hollow Golf Course, Burlington
Bold Statement – McCoy / Elliott win IGA Four-Ball title,
Holck / Watson win Senior Division in playoff
Gene Elliott (Le) and Mike McCoy (Right) celebrate their third IGA
Four-Ball title. The duo shot sixteen under for the tournament (128),
including a seven under, 65 in the final round.
The side of Mike McCoy and Gene
Elliott made a bold statement in their
title defense of the IGA Four-Ball
Championship. The duo teamed up for
a second round 65 (-7) to finish at 128
(-16) for the tournament - good for a
three stroke win over J.D. Anderson
/ Bret Taylor and overnight leaders
Dusty Drenth / Matt Schlueter.
“Gene just played beautiful, especially
on the back nine,” McCoy said. “He
made some big putts.”
Elliott’s second shot from 250 yards
on the par five final hole at Spirit
Hollow Golf Course was something of
beauty as well. His second shot came
to rest just a few feet from the hole.
Elliott’s eagle provided the three-shot
cushion for the team and captured
their third overall IGA Four-Ball title
(2012, 2015, 2016).
“Gene just striped a three wood,”
McCoy said. “It never left the hole.
Yesterday I made more birdies, today
was his day.”
Elliott agreed it was a team effort both
days.
“Mike ran the tables yesterday and
I ran them today,” Elliott said. “We
tried to get two in the fairway, two
on the green. It played hard. Those
second shots were tough with the
wind.”
McCoy commented neither was trying
to just get the ball close once they
were on the green as they combined
for six birdies, an eagle and a lone
bogey on the scorecard.
“We putted pretty boldly,” McCoy
said. “We putted to make them, we
weren’t lagging a lot of putts. We
were trying to make putts. We’re real
thrilled to defend our title and look
forward to trying it again next year.”
In the Senior Division, the side of
Curtis Holck / Bill Watson matched
their opening round 69 (-3) in round
two and were able to prevail in a
playoff over first round co-leaders
George Gartelos / Todd Hingtgen.
Holck / Watson used five birdies
against two bogies to get into the
playoff.
Senior Division champions, Curtis Holck (L) of Ankeny
and Bill Watson (R) of Mason City.
