Janece Schwartzkopf outlasts

field to win Super Senior

Janece Schwartzkopf (left) finished 3rd overall

and earned low Super Senior. (R) Kathy Fortune

finished runner-up in the Open Division.

Turning in a second round 74 (+5) was just enough for Janece Schwartzkopf to capture the Super

Senior Division of the 52nd Iowa Women’s Senior Amateur. The Super Senior Division is made up

of ages 60 & over participants.

Schwartzkopf, who trailed Jennifer Corkrean (79) by five shots after the opening round, made

a charge on day two to overtake both Corkrean and Janis Owens, who was in second place after

her first round with an 80 of her own. Corkrean would slip to 84 in the final round to finish third,

while Owens shot 81, leaving her a shot back of Schwartzkopf.

Schwartzkopf ’s final round included a healthy dose of pars (11) and no double-bogey or worse

scores on the scorecard.

When the dust had settled in Clarinda, a familiar face was

still sheriff of the territory.

For the third year in a row and sixth time overall, Rose

Kubesheski took home the trophy from the 52nd Iowa

Senior Women’s Amateur. The win would also secure the

2017 IGA Senior Women’s Player of the Year award for

Kubeskeski, her fourth overall and second in a row.

Following an opening round 78 (+9), where she was unable

to convert any birdies, Kubesheski entered the second

round two shots back of opening-round

leader Kathy Fortune (76). Fortune was

steady in the opening round, making 13

pars.

Kubesheski rebounded on day two, making a

total of three birdies on her way to a final round

73 (+4), to outdistance Fortune by six strokes.

Clarinda Country Club is known for its tight

fairways and challenging approach shots.

Hitting it close with her short irons was the

key for the champion as missing a green

meant a very difficult up-and-down.

When Kubesheski was asked about what

allowed her to have such a successful round she

responded by saying “I hit some really good wedge

shots today.”

The Iowa Senior Women’s Amateur will be played

at Sunnyside Country Club August 27-28, 2018.
