TRI-STATE MASTERS

Dakota Dunes CC, Covington Links GC, Green Valley GC

May 20-22. 2016

Dreckman wins Tri-State Masters in

Playoff

Nick Dreckman punctuated his 18-foot birdie putt on the first

hole of sudden death to win the Tri-State Masters on Sunday

with a primal yell. Afterwards, the three-time champion spoke of

an emotional whirlwind he’s been through the last year.

“My dad passed away last April and I really haven’t played a lot

of good golf since then,” Dreckman said. “It all kind of came to

fruition today. I got off to a good start, I was four under through

four, made a few mistakes coming in but kind of held together

and posted a good number and it was good enough to get me

into a playoff. And, God willing that putt on No. 9 went in. That’s

a feeling every golfer wants.”

Dreckman returned to the ninth hole for a playoff along with

Tyson Bodlak, Bret Taylor and Dan Freed after each finished

regulation with a 222 total in the unique event played on three

different courses in three different states.

All four reached the green in regulation and Bodlak was first

to putt, leaving his birdie try just short. Freed then ran his putt

some eight feet past the hole and Taylor was also a tad short on

his birdie attempt.

Dreckman faced a twisting 18-footer and buried it in the center

of the cup for his third Tri-State Masters victory. The 35-year-old

Le Mars, Iowa, resident also won in 2011 and 2012 and joins

Ayron Corporon (2006-08) as a three-time champion.
