Tom Whitney wins Waterloo Open, Alex

Higgs earns low Amateur

Scores at the 2016Waterloo Open were littered with red numbers.

Alex Higgs, who won the amateur division, carded a 54-hole mark

of 16-under par, 200. The pro champion, Tom Whitney, carded

a blistering 12-under, 60 in Sunday’s final round. He won the

tournament by three strokes at 23-under par, 193.

Justin Pansegrau finished tied for second in the amateur division.

He recorded rounds of 69-70-69 for a three-day total of six-under,

210. Josh Black and Kevin Ault also turned in top-10 performances

in Waterloo. Both Ault and Black finished tied for eighth at two-

under, 214.

In the Senior Division, Joe Bates, Brian Verduyn, Jeff Ott and Bill

Watson all made it to the final day of competition after making

the 36-hole cut. Bates fired rounds of 72-71-73 to finish even-par

for the tournament at 216, which was good enough for medalist

honors. Ott finished second.

Kraft, Peterson hoist champion trophies

at Northwest Amateur

The 2016Northwest Amateur produced yet another exciting finish

after four rounds of action. A pair of Iowa residents were crowned

champions this year. Justin Kraft, of Lake View, fired rounds of

71-69-64-71 for a 13-under, 275 to win the Championship flight.

Urbandale’s, Ron Peterson, went 73-67 to finish five-under, and

take home the Senior title.

Kraft fired back-to-back rounds of sub-70 golf (69-64) in rounds

two and three, and held a two stroke advantage heading to the

final day. He tallied four birdies and three bogeys in his final

18-holes for a one-under, 71.

Jon Olson finished runner-up in the Championship flight, coming

up two-strokes behind Kraft (63-70-73-71=277.) Olson carded the

low 18-hole score of the event with an outstanding nine-under,

63 in round one. The Ankeny resident poured in nine birdies and

didn’t yield a single bogey. It was the first time he has played in

the event.

Peterson turned it up a notch for his final 18-holes. He birdied the

first four holes of his round, and had eight total through 15-holes.

At one point, he was at seven-under for the tournament. Even

after making a double-bogey on 17 and a bogey on 18, Peterson

went on to earn medalist honors.

Ankeny’s Curtis Holck was runner-up on the senior side. Holck

carded the only other sub-par round in the second round, but it

was not enough to track down Peterson. He fired rounds of 74-71

for a two day of one-over, 145.
