Elliott wins 2016 Briarwood Amateur
Gene Elliott used a final-round 4-under
68 to move past three players and claim
the 2016 Briarwood Amateur title.
Elliott, who opened with 69, carded five
birdies and a lone bogey to move past
first round leaders, J.D. Anderson and
David Combs (opened with 67). He also
moved past Willis Gaer, who opened
with 68. Elliott finished three shots
ahead of Anderson, who posted 73 in
the final round to finish 2nd. Combs
finished alone in 3rd after a 74 on Sunday.
The Briarwood Amateur is one of the final events for the IGA
Player of the Year standings, so there were many story lines
leading into the final round. The IGA named it’s USGA Men’s State
Team participants following the event. Jon Olson, who carded
back-to-back even par 72’s, earned
the third spot with his finish. He
joined Elliott and Mike McCoy on the
team in Birmingham, Ala.
On the senior side, Dave Gaer won a
playoff over Greg Kramer to win the
title. Both players finished at 4-under
140, only one shot clear of Terry Cook
and Andy Burton. Gaer fired rounds
of 71-69 while Kramer reversed that
with 69-71. Cook shot the best round
of the tournament on the final day with a 5-under 67.

Stamey wins Iowa Open, Brown is Low Am
Nathan Stamey carded a 5-under par 67 in his final round to win Iowa
Open golf title at Lake Panorama near Panora.
Stamey, a professional from Bluon, SC finished with a 54-hole score of
13-under-par 203. That was good for a two-shot margin over runner-up,
Scott Gutschewski of Elhorn, Neb. Stamey earned a first-prize check of
$25,000.
Matthew Jennings of Prairie City carded a three day total of 205,
11-under-par to finish alone in third place.
Stuart Hendley of Midland, Tex. won the Senior Division with a total of
one over par.
On the Amateur side, Jon Brown (72-72-73) of Clive held off Mike
McCoy (70-73-75) of West Des Moines by two strokes to take home
the title. McCoy held a one shot lead heading into the final day of play,
but a three-under-par, 33, on the opening nine propelled Brown into
the lead by one stroke. Both Brown
and McCoy struggled on the back nine
carding 4-over-par rounds of 40; Brown’s
opening nine proved to be enough to
hold off McCoy.
On the Senior side, Bill Manske (70-
73-79) of Algona held off Ron Peterson
(79-73-78) of Urbandale by one stroke to
take home the Senior Amateur title.
