Jon Olson & Jon Brown

Jon Brown, Clive, and Jon Olson, Ankeny, qualified for the second

consecutive year for the USGA Amateur Four-Ball. After making

the field at Winged Foot in 2016 they made the trek to North

Carolina and famed Pinehurst in 2017.

The pair made it through a playoff for the final qualifying spot at

Rush Creek Golf Club in Maple Grove, Minnesota. They were one

of three teams to shoot a 7-under 65 during regulation to tie for

second (64 was medalist). Their qualifier was marred with poor

weather the whole day. In fact, the duo had started their playoff

and, after hitting approaches to the first green, play was suspended

for the day. They slept on two birdie putts and, when they came

back in the morning, Olson drained his to claim the spot.

One of the other two teams in that playoff was Taylor Sandbom of Duluth, MN and Glenn Walls of

Cedar Falls, Iowa. They finished as the 1st

alternate, but would eventually get the call

from the USGA that they were in the field.

At the championship proper neither team

featuring Iowans would make the cut into

match play. Brown and Olson opened with

a 77 on the more difficult No. 2 layout then

shot a 75 over the No. 8 course. Sandblom

and Walls shot 72 (No. 8) and 74 (No. 2).

The cut came at 1-under-par 140.

Britta Snyder, Ames, and Sarah Beqaj, Toronto, Canada, teamed

up to qualify for the 2017 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball

Championship. The two became friends after being paired

together at the U.S. Kids Golf World Championship and through

playing AJGA events around the country.

Their journey to The Dunes Golf & Beach Club in Myrtle Beach,

S.C., began in Minnesota. They played for one spot at Chaska

Town Course where they were the only team to break par,

shooting a 1-under 71 to beat out the next closest team by a shot.

What should be noted is that the pair were 14-years old at the time

of qualifying, making them one of the youngest teams to compete.

At the Championship proper the team would post a first round score of 2-under, 70. They were

near the cut line heading into the second round of stroke play and needed to shoot even par or

better. The pair made a bogey on the

first and a comeback birdie on the

second but quickly lost three shots to

par on holes eight and nine, making a

triple and bogey to finish the nine at

4-over par. They fought back making

birdies on 11 and 14 but were unable to

get anything further going. The duo shot

a second round 76, leaving them four

shots off the cut line into match play.
