In the final USGA State Team Championship ever, Team Iowa went
out on a nice note.
The trio of Jenny Heinz, Leanne Smith and Britta Snyder gave Iowa
it’s second best finish ever in the biennial event, posting a team score
of 457 (+25) at The Club at Las Campanas in Santa Fe, N.M. It was
good enough to make the cut and finish in solo 19th place. The best
finish ever for Iowa was 17th in 2005 at Berkley Hall GC in South
Carolina.
The USGA determined to retire both the Men’s and Women’s State
Team Championships following the 2017 Women’s Championship.
The events began in 1995, coinciding with the USGA’s 100th
Anniversary celebration. The intent was to hold them just that year,
but they were so popular with the players that they continued on an
every-other-year basis.
The scoring format counts the best two-out-of-three 18 scores each
day.
Snyder, 15, of Ames, led the squad in New Mexico. She posted one
of the two counting scores for Iowa each of the three
days, shooting 79-72-71—222 to finish in a tie for
19th individually. Heinz, 35, of Cedar Falls fired 76-
80-84—240 while Smith, 36, of Indianola, came back
after a rough first round 86 with 79-80 to post 245.
Snyder and Smith were both playing in their first
USGA Women’s State Team while Heinz has been
a fixture on recent teams. 2017 was her sixth
appearance, making every Iowa team since 2007.
The final championship was ultimately captured by Tennessee, who
finished one stroke ahead of Delaware and two ahead of Florida.
Iowa finished 26 strokes back.
