Jon Brown of Urbandale

fought both the wind and the

field to win the 2017 Carroll

Amateur.

Brown opened up the first

round with a 73 (+2) trailing

Zach Christianson by one.

The second round brought a

couple more names into the

mix with Brad Krohn coming from behind, shooting

a 69 (-2) to position himself in a tie for second with

Brown at 147. J.J. Cooney also had a strong second

round shooting 71 (E), moving into the lead at 145.

The final round was all about survival. Brown played

steady and snuck his way back into the lead. He only

had one major blemish on his card, a double bogey

on the 15th hole. He turned in a 73 (+2) that would

eventually put him two shots clear of Cooney.

In the Senior Division Bret Taylor won handily

over Gary Ellis. He shot rounds of 75-68 (143). Rob

Christensen was the low Super Senior after finishing

3rd overall in the Senior Division.

Gene Elliott, of West Des

Moines, won his third Iowa

Masters title after posting

a 54-hole total of 205,

11-under par.

Elliott shot rounds of 66-69-

70 to edge out Jon Brown, of

Clive, who has four Masters

titles of his own. Brown shot

three rounds of 69 for a total

of 207 (-9).

Iowa Amateur Champion Trevor Ullestad, of Jewell,

finished in third place after shooting solid rounds of

71-71-69.

Marshalltown’s Cole Davis had a nice week as well,

finishing tied for eighth overall and was crowned

Junior Champion after shooting rounds of 73-72-74.

Ron Peterson, of Urbandale, left the Senior Division

field in the dust. He outdistanced Mike McDonald, of

Williamsburg, Virginia, and Pat Roan, of Swisher, by

12 shots. Peterson posted a 54-hole total of 211, (-5).

The 2017 Waterloo Open

left nothing back for the

local fans. Austin Quick, of

Phoenix, Ariz. won his biggest

event of his young career by

shooting rounds of 66-63-65

for a 194 total (-22). With this

win he took home $50,000 in

prize money.

Quick was tied for the lead

through two rounds with Zach

Wright of Stuart, Fla. Wright played an excellent final

round shooting 67 (-5), but was two shots shy of

overtaking Quick.

In the Amateur Division, Alex Schaake of Omaha, Neb.

won by three strokes over Trey Tussey. Schaake posted

rounds of 72-68-65 for a total of 205, (-11). The amateur

division plays three different courses in the Waterloo

area starting with either Gates Park or South Hills and

finishing up at Irv Warren.

The Senior Division was won by Joe Palmer, of

Urbandale. Palmer shot 71-68-69 for a total of 208, (-8).

Joe Urbanek, of Tripoli, captured the 2017 Fort Dodge

Amateur by a landslide. Urbanek won by a margin of

seven shots over the next closest competitor.

Urbanek, who shot rounds of 74-71-73, finished with

a total of 218 (+5). Runner-up finisher James Calkins,

from West Union, played

consistently with three 75s

but was unable to get enough

steam going to get close

enough to Urbanek.

The Senior Division turned

out to be a tight race between

Joe Palmer, of Urbandale, and

Bret Taylor, of Booneville.

Taylor held the lead by four

after rounds of 72-71, 143. That lead would dwindle in

the final round as Palmer would make a run on the front

nine.

Palmer turned in a 32, (-3) to Taylors 36, (+1). A four

shot swing would put them tied heading into the final

nine. Palmer ended up making nine straight pars to

narrowly beat out Taylor by a single stroke for the win.
