Nyasha Mauchaza made the long trip from South
Florida to play in his first Iowa Open. It was worth it.
The Zimbabwe native opened his first round by shooting
a 65 (-7) to take the lead. He followed that up with a
round of 70 (-2), which put him behind Chase Hanna
of Leawood, Kan. who was sitting at the top of the
leaderboard at -11.
The final round was nothing but exciting. Nate
Yankovich, who played golf at the University of Iowa,
got hot in the final round. He birdied seven of his first 12
holes, getting to -15 for the tournament. He had the lead
but bogeys at 13 and 16 caused him to drop back.
While Yankovich was making his move, Mauchaza kept
his head down and fought his way back into contention.
Mauchaza put himself into a tie for the lead with two
holes to play, but a perfectly timed birdie on the 17th
hole put him in the lead to stay and the $25,000 prize in
his back pocket.
Nick Voke, from Ames, earned low amateur honors after
a string of 69s placed him T6th
