115th Iowa Amateur Championship

The Cedar Rapids Country Club, Cedar Rapids

Ullestad Wins 115th

Iowa Amateur

Broc Everett (L) and Dennis Bull both share the

second place trophy. Both had chances coming in

and made the finish a nail biter.

Frank Lindwall finished 4th overall

and was the low junior.

T

revor Ullestad didn’t get off to a great start in the final round of the Iowa

Amateur, but it didn’t take him long to right the ship and become the 115th

Iowa Amateur champion.

Ullestad, 21, of Jewell, shot three rounds in the 60s (68-69-69) at Cedar

Rapids Country Club and overcame a three shot deficit heading into the final

round to win by two over Broc Everett, who began day three with the

lead, and Dennis Bull.

After a routine par at the opening hole of his final round,

Ullestad - who is a senior on the Missouri golf team - topped

a fairway wood off the tee on the second hole, leading to a

bogey. He then flubbed a pitch shot on hole three that lead to

another bogey. But pars on the next two holes helped settle

him down, then an eagle on the short par-5 6th sent him on a

roll.

He followed up his eagle with birdies at 8 and 9 to close out

the front nine with a two-under-par 34. He opened the back

nine with pars on the first four holes, made a bogey at 14, then

birdied the 15th and 16th holes. At that point he had a two shot lead

and made two pars to close out the biggest win of his young career.

Everett, 22, of West Des Moines, who could do virtually no wrong

during a second round 7-under 65, couldn’t get anything going on

the last day. He mixed six pars and three bogeys over the front nine

of his final round to fall two behind Ullestad. Then a solid back

nine 35 only matched the eventual champion. Everett, who is in

his senior season at Augusta University, posted a 3-under 69 in his

opening round.

Bull, 35, of Norwalk, was the first round leader.

He opened the championship with a 65 of his

own, besting the field by three. He was unable

to keep that momentum going in round two as

he posted a 75 but finished strong, posting a 68

on day three. His final round featured a clean

card - four birdies and zero bogeys - moving

him into a tie for second.

Rounding out the top five were Frank

Lindwall, 18, of Marion, who fired rounds of

69-71-69 to finish solo fourth and Matt Walker,

20, of Ottumwa (5th). Walker, who is in his

junior season at Iowa, shot 74-67-71 over the

three days. Lindwall is in his freshman season

at Iowa State.

Cedar Rapids Country Club is the only

Donald Ross-designed course in Iowa. The

club underwent an extensive renovation

the past few years, which has been

universally praised. It was the fifth time

the club has hosted the Iowa Amateur

overall and first since 1984.
