B

ritta Snyder accentuated three days of beautiful weather with three days

of wonderful golf during the 2017 Iowa Women’s Amateur. Snyder, of

Ames, shot even-par (216) to win by a staggering 13 shots at Hyperion Field

Club in Johnston. At only 15 years old, she became the second-youngest

person to win the Iowa Women’s Amateur. The only younger was Edith

Estabrooks, who won at age 14 in 1935.

Snyder took control of the championship in the second round. After an

opening round 73 that left her one shot back, she fired a 2-under-par

70 to vault to the lead. Her second round was three shots better than

the next-best that day, and eight shots better than first

round leader Maddie Bertsch, of Robins. She now

entered the final round with a seven shot lead over

Bertsch, who was still the nearest challenger.

The youngster would only increase the lead

throughout the final round. In fact, a par on the first

hole helped her add three shots right away. From there,

she never looked back. Her closing 73 was once again the

best score of the day, this time by two over the 75 posted

by Leanne Smith.

When all was said and done, Snyder would post nine

birdies during the 54-hole championship, against seven

bogeys and a double bogey to finish on even par. It

was very steady and, according to the champion,

sometimes uninteresting golf.

“I think sticking to my game plan worked,”

Snyder said. “I didn’t hit very many drivers. I

just tried to hit fairways and keep it under the

hole on these greens. I just hit a lot of shots to

the middle of the green and two putted from

there. It was boring, but good golf.”

Smith, of Indianola, and Bertsch would

ultimately tie for second (+13).

In the Open Division Janece Schwartzkopf,

of Stuart, came from three shots down in the

final round to edge Hyperion member Kari

Manning by one.

Manning, of Urbandale, entered the final round

with a two shot lead over Kathy Fortune, of

Rockwell City, and three clear of Schwartzkopf.

But Schwartzkopf put together a final round 80

that was four better than Manning and seven

clear of Fortune to claim the title. It was the

second straight win for Schwartzkopf in the

Open Division of the Iowa Women’s Amateur.
