U.S. Senior Open Qualifier loaded with talent

On the heels of this year’s Principal Charity Classic, the U.S. Senior Open Qualifier at Briarwood Club, Ankeny, will include a winner of the Masters and Open Championship.

Larry Mize (pictured above), who won the 1987 Masters, and Todd Hamilton, 2004 Open Championship winner, will headline the field on June 11, in Ankeny. Others in the field you may recognize include Willie Wood, Jay Don Blake, Tom Byrum, Tim Petrovic, Dan Forsman, Mike Goodes, John Jacobs and John Huston. A total of 39 will participate in the qualifier, including several local amateurs and professionals who  have their sights set on the U.S. Senior Open to be held The Broadmoor Golf Club, Colorado Springs, CO.

Local Iowa amateurs that look to make an impact on Monday include Joe Palmer (currently 1st in the IGA Senior Player of the Year standings), Terry Cook (2nd), Jon Brown (4th) and Tom Norton (5th).

Follow Iowa golfers on their quest toward the U.S. Open

Typically known as ‘Golf’s Longest Day’, several players from or with connections to Iowa will chase the dream of the U.S. Open. Players will compete over 36-holes with a chance to qualify for the U.S. Open to be played at Shinnecock Hills Golf Course, Southampton, NY, June 14–17.

Four move one step close to Shinnecock Hills

Four players will move one step close to the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club after surviving the Local Qualifier at Glen Oaks Country Club on Monday.

Professional Sean McCarty was medalist with an impressive 67 (-4) on the day.

“I drove the ball good today,” McCarty said. “I kept it in play and out here you have to stay below the hole. The greens were slippery, you had to be careful. The rough was thick. If you weren’t driving it well, you’d have a long day. It was a great day to play with the wind being down.”

McCarty’s round included five birdies and just a lone bogey, which he admitted was due to a three putt.

“I only did that once,” McCarty said. “Which is good out here with those slick greens.”

Amateur Dennis Bull, who turned in 32 (-3) on the front nine, played even on the way in to grab a spot into the Sectional Qualifier with a 68 (-3). Also qualifying into Sectionals were amateur Lucas Scherf and professional Zach Steffen, both shooting 69 (-2) on the day.

Andrew Huseman will be 1st Alternate after posting 71 (E), while Jake Marvelli, 72 (+1), won a four-way playoff on the first playoff hole to secure the 2nd Alternate spot.

Fisher qualifies in Omaha
In a Local Qualifier held in Omaha, NE, Darin Fisher (Albia) qualified into sectionals. The qualifier was administered by the Nebraska Golf Association on May 17. Read more about Fisher by clicking here.

U.S. Open Local has 67 players

67 players will compete for four qualifying spots into the sectional round of the 2018 U.S. Open Championship on Monday, May 14th at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines.  Players will play 18 holes at Glen Oaks, while the four who move on to the sectional round will play 36 more to try and qualify for the field at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.

Glen Oaks Country Club will host the U.S. Open Local qualifier for the first time since 2002, but they are no stranger to hosting USGA qualifying events.  They hosted the USGA Amateur Four-Ball qualifying in 2015, U.S. Amateur qualifying in 2005 and 2013 and U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifying in 2004 and 2009.  They also hosted the Iowa Amateur in 2011.
