Harry Burrell was widely known for his work as the Sports Information Director at Iowa State University from 1941-1978. Besides the work he did for the Cyclones, Harry also had a large impact on the game of golf within the state of Iowa. Mr. Burrell not only managed the Iowa Masters golf tournament at Veenker Memorial for almost 40 years, but was also a past president of the Iowa Golf Association and volunteered his time at IGA conducted championships. His work helped promote the game of golf throughout the state. Harry was the longest-tenured SID in collegiate history at 44 years when he retired. He first held the job at Northern Iowa and worked there from 1934 to 1941. He was at Iowa State from 1941 to 1978, with a break to serve his country with the Navy. He served as a gunnery officer in the Pacific theatre during World War II. Mr. Burrell was 93 when he passed away on Jan. 10, 2005.
