Past Herman Sani Scholarship Committee Chair, long-time IGA supporter Jim Mitchell passes away

Jim Mitchell, who served the Iowa Golf Association in many capacities over the years, most notably for his many years as chairperson of the Herman Sani Scholarship Committee, passed away at the age of 88 on Saturday, August 14, 2021. Jim and his beloved wife of 63 years, Pat, had lived the last several years in Atlanta, Georgia, following a retirement stay in the Villages, Florida.

Mitchell, who also served on the Board of Directors of the IGA, was a prominent player on the course as well, capturing the 1968 Northwest Amateur, 1991 Iowa Senior Amateur and 2001 IGA Four-Ball (Senior Division) with partner Jim Bianco. Mitchell was the 1986, 1990 and 1991 IGA Senior Player of the Year and received the prestigious George Turner Distinguished Service Award in 2007 for his impact to the game of golf through years of volunteer service.

Mitchell’s true passion within his work with the IGA was his role as chairperson of the Herman Sani Scholarship Committee, a position he held for several years.

“Jim was an all-time great from my perspective,” Steve Jermier, 1996 Herman Sani Scholarship recipient and current IGA Vice President said. “Certain people stand out in your memories, and he was definitely one for me.”

McCoy pulls away for victory at 43rd Iowa Senior Amateur, Pomerantz takes Super Senior crown

The Iowa Golf Hall of Famer added another one to his resume. Norwalk’s Mike McCoy (above right) finished off the 43rd Iowa Senior Amateur Championship to win by a grand total of five shots over Curtis Holck, of Ankeny and a fellow Iowa Golf Hall of Famer, Gene Elliott, of West Des Moines.

“We have a great field, I knew with Gene, Jon, Joe and Curtis and all these good players, I was going to have to play well (to win),” McCoy said. “It was definitely one that I wanted to win, being my first Iowa Senior Am (I’ve played in). I usually had a conflict this week in the past.”

The Preserve Golf Course on Rathbun Lake played difficult during the last two rounds. The wind started to kick up and made many players rethink their shots. McCoy, who didn’t play a practice round, took it slow and played it safe at the beginning.

“I played a little defensively, but I stayed patient,” McCoy said. “I felt a little freer yesterday and got off to a good start today and I was just going to keep playing aggressively. I only made one bogey the whole tournament, so I was pretty pleased with that.”

During the week, McCoy (left) recorded 12 birdies and one lone bogey in the first round. To maneuver your way around this golf course and with only one bogey is an outstanding achievement. Now to add to the already impressive resume, McCoy will take this win and confidence into the U.S. Senior Amateur.

Holck and Elliott, who finished in a tie for second place, played good golf all week long. Elliott was the leader after round one, shooting a four-under 68, but did not break 70 in his last two rounds. Holck fired back-to-back rounds of 71 to begin his tournament and followed them up with a 68 in the final round today.

A four-way tie to round out the top-five between Joe Palmer, Tim McKnight and another Iowa Golf Hall of Famer, Jon Brown. All three competitors finished the week at four-under-par with a 212 tally. McKnight was tied for first with Elliott after the first round, but as the conditions grew more difficult, the scores started to climb.

Palmer recorded rounds of 70, 72 and a 70 in the final round. Palmer was making noise all week, recording 11 birdies, but bogeys continued to pop up on his card. Brown was in second place after the first two rounds, but a double in each round hurt his chances at a first Senior Amateur. Brown made the most birdies out of any player this week (14) and even threw in an eagle during his second round.

In the Super Senior Division, Robert Pomerantz (above left) came back after being down two shots and defeated Rob Christensen. The course played tough, and the weather conditions did not help the players this week Pomerantz commented.

“Never having played the golf course until last Thursday when I came down here for a practice round,” Pomerantz said. “We had tornados, hail and rain during my practice round, but I got a look at the holes and what have you and obviously you want to stay out of the heathers. I did a good job, I only hit it in there one time and was able to find it and take an unplayable and proceed to not make a double bogey.”

Pomerantz (right) posted a two-over 74 in his first round but turned it up a notch and had back-to-back under-par rounds of 71 to finish off the tournament. Pomerantz made many birdies, but a cold putter would not end his chance this week.

“This is the first tournament that I have won, and I have won a few, that I haven’t putted well,” Pomerantz said. “I putted very poorly this tournament and I gave away untold shots on the green and I made two bogeys on par-five where you can toss the ball closer.”

Heading into the last three holes, Pomerantz was tied with Christensen. He knew he had to make something happen and ended the final three hole stretch at two-under-par with birdies on holes 16 and 17.

“I felt good coming off the golf course yesterday, score wise, and I said try not to mess up,” Pomerantz said. “I did early, but I got it back and then I was pretty good for a long stretch of holes. Playing in competition is so much different than just playing with your friends.”

Christensen may have finished in second place, but he had a great week of golf. Christensen carded two rounds of 75 and fired a 68 in the second round of the tournament, giving him a two-shot lead. A rough stretch of holes early for Christensen was the downfall for his round today. After a 40 on the front nine, Christensen was able to fight back and shot one-under on his back, but it was not enough to earn the victory.

Rick Gorbell, of Cedar Falls, and Jim Butler, of Fort Madison took third place at four-over par. The two finished with a 220 tally and stayed in contention all week long. Butler was the first-round leader, but as the wind picked up in the second round, bogeys started appearing on his card. Joe Ward rounds out the top-five coming in the fifth place position with a 221 tally.

The next Iowa Golf Association event on the schedule is the IGA Women’s Mid-Am Series Event #3 at A.H. Blank Golf Course in Des Moines.

Smith travels outside Iowa, grabs bid to U.S. Women’s Mid-Am

On Monday, August 16th, Leanne Smith (right), of Indianola, finished with medalist honors at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Am Qualifier held in St. Joseph, Missouri. Smith will now travel to Berkeley Hall Club in Bluffton, South Carolina for the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship in September.

At the beginning of her round, Smith started slowing with a bogey and a double in her first four holes. Smith made a birdie on the eighth hole but followed it up with a double on nine. Sitting at four-over-par after her front nine, Smith got back on track and made four straight pars to start her back nine.

After recording par on hole 13, three-straight bogeys showed up and put Smith at seven-over. With two holes to play, Smith was on the outside looking in and knew she needed to make something happen. Two par-five remained, and Smith took advantage. She made birdie on 17 and she was now in a three-way tie for first place.

A short par-five was all that was left for Smith. She needed birdie to win and qualify for the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. Instead of making birdie, Smith ensured her victory and recorded an eagle on her final hole of the qualifier. Smith won by two shots over Susan Devoe, of Overland Park, Kansas, and Martha Linscott, of Mission Hills, Kansas.

Kathy Dearborn, of Anamosa, competed for her spot into the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship in Waukegan, Illinois. Dearborn missed a qualifying position by one stroke, but earned the first alternate after defeating Madeline Bond in a playoff.

The tournament dates are September 25-30, at Berkeley Hall Club (North Course) in Bluffton, South Carolina.

McCoy surges to the lead at 43rd Iowa Senior Amateur

Our second-round leader at the 43rd Iowa Senior Amateur Championship is Iowa Golf Hall of Famer, Mike McCoy (above) of Norwalk. The conditions were tough for everyone, but the players seemed to be on point. In today’s windy round, McCoy put together a low round of 67, and managed to make five birdies. Out of 36 holes, McCoy has only recorded one bogey.

After a slow start to yesterday’s round, McCoy been seven-under in his last 28 holes at The Preserve on Lake Rathbun. McCoy, who leads the IGA in total career wins (35) has never held the Senior Amateur trophy. Tomorrow could be the day he takes the trophy home with him.

Iowa Golf Hall of Famer, Jon Brown of Adel, is tied for second place alongside Indianola’s, Tim McKnight. Both McCoy and Brown fired rounds of 67 today and Brown is only two shots back. Neither Brown nor McCoy have won this event and doing so would just add to their already impressive resumes.

McKnight was tied for the lead after yesterday’s round, but three bogeys in the middle of today’s round slowed him up. A confidence booster of back-to-back birdies at the end of his round today should fire him up going into tomorrow’s round.

A man who has won this championship five times sits alone in fourth place. Gene Elliott, of Norwalk, was tied with McKnight for the lead after today’s round, but the wind played a factor for both players. Elliott had a rough patch in the beginning of his round, but a two-under back nine helped get his round back to even figures. Elliott knows what it takes to win this event, even if he is down three shots.

In the Super Senior Division, the leaderboard is shuffled, and Marshalltown’s Rob Christensen currently leads at one-under through 36 holes. Christensen was able to find success in today’s round, recording three birdies and an eagle on the final hole of the day. A round of 68 pushed Christensen into first place with a two-shot lead heading into the final round tomorrow.

Not far off the lead is Joe Ward, of Polk City, and Robert Pomerantz, of Des Moines. Ward and Pomerantz are tied for second place at one-over-par and are two shots back. Ward posted a 73 in today’s round and had two bogeys on his final holes. Pomerantz recorded four birdies today, but three bogeys set him back to one-under on the day.

In fourth place is Pete Kelly, of Marshalltown, who shot a 75 today. Kelly’s first round 71 put him in second place, but a 39 on the back nine today pushing him back. Not out of the race by any means, Kelly will still have some work to do to pick up three shots on Christensen.

Tied for fifth place is our overnight leader, Jim Butler and the current leader in Super Senior Player of the Year, Pat Ryan. Butler fired a 69 in the first round but made too many early mistakes today and carded a 78. Ryan started quick with two straight birdies, but those would be his final birdies of his round today. Both players. Are four shots back and will have to come out strong in the final round tomorrow.

Elliott, McKnight set pace at 43rd Iowa Senior Amateur

Two rounds of 68 lead the first round at the 43rd Iowa Senior Amateur at The Preserve Golf Course on Rathbun Lake. Gene Elliott, of West Des Moines and Tim McKnight, of Indianola are the leaders heading into the second round.

Elliott was the first to post 68 and finished with a bogey-free scorecard. The key to success for Elliott was birdies on the par-fives. He played the par-fives at four-under par and missed his chance to birdie all of them with a putt on hole 18.

McKnight played his first nine at one-under par but stepped on the gas once he turned to the back-nine. Birdies on 11, 14 and 17 pushed McKnight into a tie with the Iowa Golf Hall of Famer and the two competitors will tee it up together in tomorrow’s second round.

In third place after day one is Tom Christensen, of Waterloo. Christensen posted a three-under round of 69 and sits one shot behind the leaders. Norwalk’s Mike McCoy and Joe Palmer will play together tomorrow after posting two-under ton Thursday afternoon.

Fort Madison’s, Jim Butler holds a two-shot lead heading into the second round of the Super Senior Division. The 69-year-old posted a round equal to his age today and recorded five birdies. Butler got off to a quick start with three birdies in his first four holes. An even 36 on his back nine kept him from running away with the tournament early.

Tied for second place is Dan Dalziel, of Cedar Rapids, and Pete Kelly, of Marshalltown. The two fired rounds of 71 and will play alongside Butler in tomorrow’s round. Dalziel was two-over through his first six holes but continued to fight and ended his round in red-figures. Kelly started making birdies quick after three in his first six holes, but three bogeys on the back-nine set him back two shots.

A four-way tie for fourth place round out the top-five between Sam Aossey, of Cedar Rapids, Marshalltown’s Pat Ryan, Polk City’s Joe Ward and Bruce Neeley, of Independence. All four competitors carded rounds of 72 and sit three-shots back.

Osborn, Anderson grab spots at U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifier

Massachusetts is on the horizon for Bowen Osborn (right), of Jacksonville, FL, and J.D. Anderson, of Johnston. Osborn and Anderson qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny on Monday. Come September, Osborn and Anderson will be playing Sankaty Head Golf Club and Miacomet Golf Course and will be competing against the world’s best amateur golfers ages 25 and older.

The Jacksonville native earned the medalist honors after carding a bogey-free round that consisted of six birdies and an eagle. In route to a 63, he made back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18 to surpass Anderson’s round of 64 by a shot.

Though Anderson (left) fell short of medalist honors, he did walk away with a qualifying spot to the U.S. Mid-Amateur. Anderson also had a clean score card and posted seven birdies to take second place by two shots. He made three straight birdies on holes 12, 13 and 14 to push him into a qualifying position.

Dennis Bull took the first alternate spot after defeating Connor Peck in a playoff. Bull joined Osborn and Anderson with bogey-free rounds today. Peck tied bull during stroke play with a five-under round of 66. Peck recorded nine birdies on the day, but four bogeys derailed his chances of qualifying.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur will be split between two golf courses and each player will play 18 holes at each course. The championship will take place from September 25-30, 2021.

Leszczynski, Liddick earn qualifying spots into U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur

The 2021 Iowa Senior Women’s Amateur champion, Laura Leszczynski, of St. Mary’s, (above left) played wonderful golf on Tuesday and will now be headed to Alabama for the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur. Tuesday’s qualifier was held at Stone Creek Golf Club in Williamsburg and Leszczynski cruised through the course for most the day. 

A rough start did not stop Leszczynski from taking that medal home with her.

In her first two holes she made two doubles, but in her last 16 holes, Leszczynski played par golf and recorded four birdies. This season Leszczynski has been nothing short of spectacular.

“I have felt like I have been in a groove lately,” Leszczynski said. “This is the first time in about seven years where my swing feels great. I have had knee problems, but I am finally able to swing, and it feels great.”

Leszczynski fired a four-over 75 and won the medalist honors by two shots over the second qualifier, Shelly Liddick (above right), of Bellevue, Nebraska. Liddick carded a six-over 77 and earned a spot to Lakewood, AL by four shots. 

Monica Coleman earned first alternate honors after recorded an 81 and Tina Jones will be the second alternate with a score of 84. 

The U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur will be held at The Lakewood Club in Point Clear, Alabama on September 10th and finishes on September 15th.

Ellis punches ticket to 2021 U.S. Senior Amateur

Gary Ellis (right) is headed to Detroit following his first attempt at qualifying for a U.S. Senior Amateur. The qualifier was held in Williamsburg at Stone Creek Golf Club and it played long, which suited the big-hitting 56-year-old of Norwalk.

Ellis fired a one-under round of 70 and tied with Jim Butler, of Fort Madison. The two competitors headed to the first tee box for a playoff to decide the who would qualify. Ellis pulled his drive to the left and Butler’s drive found the fairway, but left him with a long shot into the green.

“I had to lay up to about 30 yards after my tee shot and was able to make par,” Ellis said. “I shortened some holes today off the tee, which gave me a slight advantage.”

Butler managed a par and Ellis made birdie to came away with the medal. Though Butler missed the qualifying spot, he had an impressive round. Four of the six par threes resulted in birdies for Butler, and he finished as the first alternate.

The second alternate spot went to Ron Peterson who carded an even round of 71. Peterson played a solid round of golf and birdied the final hole to give himself a chance to join the playoff.

Gary Ellis will play at the Country Club of Detroit at the U.S. Senior Amateur beginning on August 28.

Echo Valley CC, Elmcrest CC win titles at 60th IGA Women’s Club Team

Following a great day for scoring at Elmcrest Country Club by many teams, Echo Valley Country Club (pictured above) captured the Team Gross title at the 60th IGA Women’s Club Team Championship. Team members, who posted 214 (+4), of Echo Valley CC included Leanne Smith, Jordan Rose, Valerie Weis and Lauren Backer. Echo Valley CC was led by Leanne Smith, who was medalist of the Individual Gross Division, who fired four-under par 66.

Briarwood Golf Club, who also posted 214 (+4), finished runner-up via the tiebreaker. Briarwood Golf Club’s team included Mikayla Olson, Julie Davidson, Kesi Linden and Emily Wilson.

In the Team Net Division home course knowledge won out, as Elmcrest Country Club (above) won the title by one shot over Echo Valley CC. Elmcrest CC, who shot 205 (-5) in the net portion of the event, was led by Julie Buerman (69 net). The team from Elmcrest CC included Buerman, Bailey Hammerberg, Amy Worden and Mary Hoefle.

Earning medalist honors in the Individual Net Division was Joanie Steinmetz (above) of Des Moines Golf & Country Club. Steinmetz had a great day on the course, shooting five-under par 65, good for a one-shot victory over Cathy West, of Urbandale Country Club.

Steffen makes Sunday charge, wins 72nd Herman Sani Tournament

He did it again.

Zach Steffen, of Des Moines, is now the owner of two (2018, 2021) Herman Sani Championships, both times his success has come at Hyperion Field Club. This year finishing at 18-under-par. Steffen fired rounds of 63, 71 and 64 and stayed one shot ahead of Iowa State University graduate, Tripp Kinney.

“I looked at the leaderboard on number seven and saw that the guys ahead of me were playing well,” Steffen said. “I knew I had to step on the pedal a little and keep making birdies. I would check it periodically and I looked on 16 tee and saw that I only had a one-shot lead. I was able to make a birdie on 17 and I knew par on 18 would get it done.”

Steffen’s second round score of 71 set him back a little, but he knew he could fire another low round on Sunday. With help from his first round of 63, Steffen was able to stay two shots off the lead following Saturday’s play.

“It is always hard to follow up a round of 63, like I had during Friday’s round,” Steffen said. “I lost my swing a little bit there, but I was able to find it last night and saw my swing on video and was able to see where I got off.”

Kinney’s runner-up place finish was nothing short of remarkable. Hunting pins seemed to be Kinney’s motto for the tournament. After 54-holes, Kinney only recorded three bogeys and filled the score card with 20 birdies.

Finishing in a tie for third with a final score of 14-under, Lachlan Barker (left) claimed the low-amateur honor this week after a three-player playoff. Barker, a fifth-year player at Iowa State, carded rounds of 64, 71 and 67 and was just four shots off the lead.

Anthony Ruthey, of Port Byron, also finished in a tie for third, but couldn’t save par on the first playoff hole. It came down to New Sharon’s Trent Lindenman and Barker for the low-amateur trophy. Barker stuck it close ,but missed his birdie putt on the second playoff hole. Lindenman had a chance to send it to extra holes but missed his parr putt.

There was a battle in the Senior Division between Jay Gregory (right), of Lineville, and Joe Palmer, of Norwalk. The. The two competitors ended up in a playoff and Gregory was able to win it on the first hole. Palmer, who has had one of his best seasons, could not get it going during his back nine.

Palmer started his day at five-under through his first eight holes, but two bogeys and two doubles placed him in a playoff with Gregory. Gregory continued to fight and made pars down the stretch to put himself in a position to win. The two battled, but Gregory came out with the victory.

A first-time winner, Bill Tank (left) of Bettendorf, took the Super Senior Division. Tank shot rounds of 74, 75 and 72 and won the playoff over Jim Madsen. Tank’s tee shot on the first playoff hole went left, but he stayed focused and was able to tie the hole.

“I actually gave myself a putt to win the match after that tee shot, but it didn’t go in,” Tank said. “I was able to win on the next hole after a good chip.”
