IGA postpones events until May 28th

IGA postpones Mid-Amateur, Women’s Mid-Am series, Four-Ball events

The Classic also postponed

APRIL 15, 2020 – The IGA Executive Committee, upon recommendations from the Rules & Competitions Committee, recently determined to postpone the first three IGA events on the calendar – the Iowa Mid-Amateur Championship, the first Women’s Mid-Amateur Series, and the IGA Four-Ball Championship.  In addition, officials at Elmwood CC have determined to postpone The Classic, the first sanctioned point event of the year.

The IGA Senior Match Play, scheduled for May 28th thru 30th, was discussed but it was determined not to postpone this event at this time.  The committee will meet again on or around May 1st to determine if that event should be postponed.  This essentially means that IGA events have been postponed until May 28th.

The new dates for the postponed events are as follows:

  • Women’s Mid-Amateur Series event #1 (Irv Warren GC, Waterloo) – Sat, June 6th
  • IGA Four-Ball (Whispering Creek GC, Sioux City) – Wed, Thurs, Aug 19-20
  • Iowa Mid-Amateur (Sunnyside CC, Waterloo) – Thurs, Fri, Sept 3-4
  • The Classic (Elmwood CC, Marshalltown) – Sat, Sun, Sept 19-20

We are grateful for these host clubs and courses and their willingness to work with us to establish new dates for these championships.  They are tremendous supporters of our events and they have been wonderful to work with during these unusual times.

Anyone who has already entered any of these events and has determined that the new dates would not work for them will be issued a full refund.  Please email Nate McCoy at [email protected].  If you can still play or are not sure yet if you can still play on the new dates, we ask that you remain in the field until you determine for certain that you cannot play, at which point a full refund will be issued.

For those that have not yet entered, entries are open for all of these events.  We encourage you to get signed up to play at (click here to do so).

Finally, we hope that all of you and your families are doing well and staying healthy.  We very much look forward to seeing everyone on the golf course this summer.

Elliott takes home fourth IGA Senior Match Play title, Kahler wins Super Senior Division

Gene Elliott (above), Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member of West Des Moines, captured his fourth IGA Senior Match Play crown on Saturday. He defeated Terry Cook of West Des Moines 3 & 2 in the championship match.

Elliott took command early in the final match by winning holes 2 thru 5 and then hole 7 to 5 up. After Cook won the 8th hole, Elliott won the 10th to go back to 5 up, which was plenty to withstand the run Cook made near the end by winning two out of three holes (12 & 14). Ties at 15 and 16 secured the championship for Elliott.

Elliott advanced to the finals by defeated #1 seed Tony Newkirk of Pleasant Hill in the semifinals. Elliott came out on top by a margin of 5 & 4. Cook defeated Iowa Golf Hall of Fame member Jon Brown of Adel in his semifinal match. A birdie on the first extra hole propelled him into the championship match.

Steve Kahler (left) of Marion is the Super Senior bracket champion. Kahler outsted Mark Hogenson of Cedar Rapids in the championship match 2 & 1.

Kahler took control early winning the first two holes. He would make the turn 3 up in the match and would remain 3 up thru 12. Hogenson then made his move, winning 14 and 15 to get within a hole. Kahler slowed the momentum by halving the 16th hole, then won the 17th to take the match.

Matt Weresh (bottom right) of Clive earned the President’s Bracket title by defeating Brian Persson of Elk Run Heights by a 4 & 3 margin. Marty Goetz of Marion defeated Doug Bryant 6 & 5 to win the Vice President’s bracket.

Elliott goes back to back at IGA Senior Match Play

Gene Elliott never played the 15th hole at Fort Dodge Country Club during this year’s IGA Senior Match Play.

“That was the key for me,” Elliott said jokingly.

In the final match, against Tom Norton, Elliott found himself in unfamiliar territory, 2 down through four holes. Elliott would win the fifth hole with a par and then would rattle off four straight birdies on #7-10 to take a commanding 3 up lead. Elliott would add two more birdies, six total in an eight-hole stretch, to close out Norton 5&4.

The win marks the second year in a row that Elliott has won this event and his third IGA Senior Match Play title overall.

Elliott, Norton advance to IGA Senior Match Play Final; Evans wins President’s Bracket

Gene Elliott raced out to an early lead and never let up against Fort Dodge CC member Dave Sergeant, winning his match 6&5. Elliott will now face Tom Norton, who defeated Jay Slings in 19 holes, in the IGA Senior Match Play Championship Match.

In the President’s Bracket Final, Edwin Evans defeated John Brooke 4&2. Evans mentioned that he was able to get off to a nice start and not make too many mistakes as the morning went along at Fort Dodge Country Club.

“I got up early in the match and just tried to hit fairways and greens,” Evans said. “I was just trying to not hit it in the rough.”

Down to four at IGA Senior Match Play

Great weather and golf shots have been seen across all of Fort Dodge Country Club for this year’s IGA Senior Match Play Championship.

Entering today’s action, Ankeny’s Jay Slings will square off against Muscatine’s Tom Norton is one semifinal match, while West Des Moines’ Gene Elliott faces Fort Dodge resident and FDCC member Dave Sergeant in the other semifinal. Sergeant has won the Senior Match Play title a total of four times. Elliott has collected two.

In the President’s Bracket John Brooke and Edwin Evans will play this morning in the championship match of that bracket. Brooke advance with a 5&4 victory over Randy Studer on Friday afternoon and Evans had to go one extra hole to defeat Randy McCaulley.

The finals of the Championship Bracket will be played this afternoon.
