Elliott, McCoy win 22nd IGA Four-Ball; Palmer, Cook fire 60 to win Senior Division

For the third year in a row and fourth overall Gene Elliott and Mike McCoy were victorious at the IGA Four-Ball Championship. This year, the duo used a second round 63 (-9) to storm back from two strokes back entering the final round. Their 128 total (-16) was two ahead of the team of George Qian/Jack Kennedy.

Council Bluffs’ Bent Tree Golf Club, which hosted this year’s IGA Four-Ball, Has been special place for McCoy.

“I won the State Amateur here (in 2010,” McCoy said. It’s a great course. It has a lot of links feels to it, which is fun.”

McCoy commented he got off to a good start in the final round, but gave credit to his partner, Elliott.

“Gene was terrific today,” McCoy said. “He made a beautiful birdie on our last hole, which we felt we needed.”

Elliott, who was literally just coming off his win at the Trans-Miss Senior Championship in California, flew into Omaha the morning of the first round.

“He was tired (yesterday) from traveling across the country,” McCoy said. “He was hitting golf shots (in the final round) like Hale Irwin out there. Just like on the PGA Tour, the don’t hit them any better than he did.

Elliott said he wouldn’t of made the trip for anyone else besides his partner, McCoy.

“This is the only guy in the world I would fly halfway across the country to play in a golf tournament with,” Elliott said.

Staying aggressive and keeping the pedal down in the second round was the key McCoy commented.

“We were bold today, we were trying to get in the left lane and honk the horn. We wanted to go right by people. That’s what we were trying to do.”

When asked if they would ‘give it a go’ again next year, their answer was simple.

“Absolutely,” McCoy said.

In the Senior Division, the team of Joe Palmer/Terry Cook made a comeback of their own. Posting a score of 60 (-12) and 127 overall (-17), the pair stormed back after being six strokes of the pace entering the final round.

“I owe a lot of credit to Terry,” Palmer said. “The turning point was when we made eagle on #12 and they made bogey. We went from two down to one up and we put the pedal down. We birdied three of the next four and never let (opening round leaders Curtin Holck/Bill Watson) them up.”

Holck and Watson, who led after an opening round 61 (-11) would finish second, two strokes back at 129 (-15).

Cook admitted he was just trying to do everything to keep the pressure off of Palmer, who was riding a hot putter during the final round.

“I was just trying to hit fairways and greens,” Cook said. “That loosened him (Palmer) up and he kept making putts. All I as trying to do was making sure he got the right read of the green, because he was putting it so well. It was fun to watch.”

Palmer said he never felt pressure to make putts as Cook was continuing to make pars.

“That’s the kind of partner you want in these if you want to go low,” Palmer said. “I helped myself out (in the Senior Player of the Year points race) and kept my partner in the game.”

Palmer said he thinks the team will stay in tact for next year too.

“I think we’ll be partners again,” Palmer said.

Allison, Dye open with 63, lead 22nd IGA Four-Ball

Norwalk’s Brian Allison and Des Moines’ Jordan Dye put on a show coming in at Bent Tree Golf Club during the opening round of the 22nd IGA Four-Ball Championship.

In fact, their whole day was something to watch. The duo from Central Iowa, who played early on Friday, penciled in a total of nine birdies, including four straight (all by by Dye) to finish off the day with 63 (-9).

Allison and Dye will see several teams in their rearview mirror lurking close behind. The teams of Aaron O’Brien/Matthew Walker, Scot Cook/Scott Hart, Dusty Stewart/Jeff Collett, George Qian/Jack Kennedy and three-time champions Gene Elliott/Mike McCoy all sit two strokes back with 65 (-7).

In the Senior Division the team of Curtis Holck/Bill Watson blistered the course for a ten under-par 61. Their round included nine birdies and an eagle. Chasing in second place is the team of Joe Palmer/Terry Cook and Bob Brummel/Todd Sapp who shot 67 (-5).

Anderson wins first career Iowa Mid-Amateur, Palmer tops in Senior Division

J.D. Anderson wasted little time sprinting out to the lead in the second round of the 32nd Iowa Mid-Amateur at Beaver Hills Country Club in Cedar Falls.
Anderson (Johnston), following a par on the opening hole, holed out for eagle on the second and birdied the third hole to pull away from his group, somewhat, early in the round. Anderson, who admitted his goal was to stay aggressive, notched four more birdies to add to his round of 67 (-5) and a 138 two-day total (-6). The win secured Anderson’s first-ever Iowa Mid-Amateur title and his first individual title of an IGA administered event.

“This means a lot,” Anderson said. “I am really happy. I had a lot more nerves today that I expected, because of what it meant. The bigger goal is to win all three (Mid-Am, Match Play, State Amateur).”

Anderson said his quick start to the round helped calm his demeanor early on.

“I was forced to lay up on two and then holed out,” Anderson said. “Then I made a 15-foot putt on three and that settled the nerves. It was a solid day. I got away with some bad shots. My main focus was to stay aggressive. I assumed someone from behind was keeping pace, so I wanted to keep making birdies

Anderson, who assumed another ‘low’ round was out there in a group ahead of him, was right. Dusty Drenth (Davenport) put together his own magic, firing a tournament low 66 (-6), but was unable to catch Anderson. Drenth shot 142 (-2) for the two-day event and finished second.

A trio of golfers, Dennis Bull (Norwalk), Kevin Ault (Cedar Rapids) and Scott Hart (West Des Moines) finished in third place at 145 (+1).

In the Senior Division, West Des Moines’ Joe Palmer (above) battled back after an opening round 75 to post two under-par 70. Palmer commented that he had not seen or played the course for some time, but was able to put together a good round on Tuesday.

“I make some mistakes (yesterday),” Palmer said. “Today I played better. My goal was to get it back to par. I thought if I shot 69 that would make the leaders have to shoot something under par too. I really didn’t know how I stood until the last putt. I am excited about the summer.”

This title adds a new accomplishment to the résumé for Palmer

“This trophy is one I had never won, this one and the State Amateur, Palmer said. “I have been fortunate to get the others, now I just need to concentrate and see what we can do at the State Amateur.”

Anderson also made the comment that he is looking forward to keeping his positive momentum going on Monday in the U.S. Open Local Qualifier, being held at Burlington’s Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

“I am really looking forward to the U.S. Open Local (at Spirit Hollow Golf Course),” Anderson said. “Hopefully I make five birdies and an eagle there too.”

Three tied for lead after opening round at 32nd Iowa Mid-Amateur

A host of players are within shouting distance of the lead after the opening round of the 32nd Iowa Mid-Amateur Championship at Beaver Hills Country Club, Cedar Falls. Mostly sunny skies along with off and on windy conditions gave players a good test of golf on Monday.

Leading the pace is Johnston’s J.D. Anderson, Norwalk’s Dennis Bull and Waterloo’s Niel Doak with 71 (-1). Anderson posted three birdies against a pair of bogeys, while Bull and Doak each made four birdies and 3 three bogeys. All three are chasing their first career Iowa Mid-Amateur title.

Anderson commented that being in position to have good looks with the putter was critical on day one.

“Getting the ball in position on the greens (was the key),” Anderson said. “There are some tricky greens out there today. It was a solid day, I was in a lot of fairways and had a lot of opportunities. I realized mid-round that even par was a good score today. There aren’t a ton of birdies out here and pars are good.”

Doak said he had nothing but positives to take from today’s round.

“On the first tee I would of taken 75 or 76,” Doak said. “I have only played eight time so far this year. The putts went in today, that’s for sure. I tried to stay out of my own way. I was three-under through 12 holes. I knew where I was at. Even with bogeying 16 and 18 I don’t care. I am still happy. We’ll see what happens tomorrow, this is a somewhat new position for me in a statewide amateur tournament.”

Bull said he spun his wheels a little at the start, but got going after a trio of birdies on the front nine.

“I played ok,” Bull said. “I got off to a slower start than I wanted to. I made birdies on 5, 8 and 9 and got going. Then I made  bogey on 10. It was great, it wasn’t bad. I had a good group, it was fun. I thought the greens were awesome. If you were out of position you could make bogey out there today.”

Lurking just two off the pace (73) is Scott Hart (West Des Moines). No less that 13 players are with four strokes of the lead. With course conditions nearly perfect in the opening round, a shoot-out on Tuesday is a distinct possibility.

In the Senior Division, David Studer (West Des Moines) and Ron Peterson (Urbandale) share the lead with 73 (+1). Tim Ward (Waterloo) is just a shot back after his 74 (+2)

A bunched leaderboard in the Senior Division sees a total of 10 players within three shots of the lead.

2017 Championship Schedule Released

The IGA is excited to announce the 2017 Championship schedule, which will feature several top venues around the state (scroll and click link at bottom for complete schedule of events).

Next year, the 115th Iowa Amateur will be contested at Cedar Rapids Country Club (CRCC), which was host to the 2016 U.S. Open Local qualifier. CRCC recently completed a tremendous restoration that will give players a challenging, but fair test.  It is the state’s only Donald Ross-designed golf course, and the recent restoration brought it back to Ross’ original vision.

CRCC also hosted U.S. Open Local qualifiers in 2003 and 2004. The Iowa Amateur will be played on Monday – Wednesday, July 24-26.

The Iowa Women’s Amateur will be played at Johnston’s Hyperion Field Club, which last hosted the championship in 2009. Hyperion recently hosted the Herman Sani Tournament and the IGA Club Team Championship in 2016. Similar to the Iowa Amateur, the Iowa Women’s Amateur will also be contested over a Monday – Wednesday (July 31-Aug. 1).

The Harvester Golf Club will once again host the IGA Match Play Championship, having done so in 2003 and 2004. The IGA Women’s Match Play will also be contested concurrently. Most recently, The Harvester hosted the 2015 U.S. Open Local qualifier. The course, which has routinely been ranked the best in the state by numerous publications, was home to the 2007 Iowa Amateur as well.  This year’s men’s and women’s Match Play is scheduled for Monday – Thursday, June 26-29.

Back on the schedule is Cedar Falls’ Beaver Hills Country Club, the host of the 2017 Iowa Mid-Amateur. This will be the fourth time the club has hosted the Iowa Mid-Am (1990, 97 & 2003).  The club has also hosted five Iowa Amateur Championships (1973, 74, 81, 93 & 98).  The course, which opened in 1965 and was designed by Larry Packard, completed a renovation of the turf on the tees, fairways and greens in 2014.

Since 2013 the Herman Sani Tournament presented by Coppola Enterprises has rotated between Echo Valley Country Club and Hyperion Field Club.  2017 marks a return to Echo Valley CC, the third time they will host. The tournament will be held on its traditional dates – Fri-Sun, August 11-13. The championship features professional and amateur golfers with proceeds from the tournament going to the IGA’s Herman Sani Scholarship Fund.

The Iowa Wife-Husband Championship will again be held at Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora, which hosted in 2016. The championship, set for Sept. 15-17, was previously held at Burlington Golf Club (2003-15) and Brooks Golf Course in Okoboji prior to that. The tournament will remain a 3-day format in which couples choose to play their two rounds on Friday & Saturday, Friday & Sunday or Saturday & Sunday.

The IGA will once again conduct a full plate of qualifying for USGA Championships in 2017. Spirit Hollow Golf Course will host U.S. Open Local Qualifying in May, Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny will host U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifying in June and Finkbine Golf Course will host U.S. Amateur Qualifying in July. Qualifying for the U.S. Mid-Amateur will be held at Davenport Country Club on Sept. 6.

The IGA shares qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball with the Nebraska Golf Association, rotating sites between the Omaha and Des Moines areas.  2017 marks the IGA’s turn to host and the qualifier will be staged at Echo Valley Country Club in late September.

In addition to those championships and USGA qualifiers already listed, the IGA will conduct events at the following venues – Otter Creek GC (Iowa Cup Matches), Bent Tree GC in Council Bluffs (IGA Four-Ball), Fort Dodge CC (Senior Match Play), Jester Park GC in Granger (Father/Son, Parent/Child), Brown Deer GC (Women’s Four-Ball), Stone Creek GC in Williamsburg (Women’s Forever 39), Coldwater GL in Ames (Iowa Junior Am & Junior Girls’ Am), Elmwood CC (Women’s Club Team), Burlington GC (Iowa Senior Am), Clarinda CC (Senior Women’s Am).

IGA Member Play Days will be scheduled and announced at a later time.
