Huser captures 1st IGA Senior Women’s Match Play crown

Geri Huser (right), of Altoona, sealed the deal at the 1st IGA Senior Women’s Match Play at Whispering Creek Golf Club in Sioux City defeating West Des Moines’ Nicki Miller 3 & 2 in a back and forth match before Huser pulled away with wins on holes #13-16 to win.

Huser admitted she had to think outside of the box on her road to the finals.

“I think the course was set up really well for both the men and women to play at the same time,” Huser said. “You had to placement shots throughout the course on a lot of different holes, and I think that is important when you have senior women playing. It makes it a lot more fun.”

Huser beat Dubuques’ Rose Kubesheski 4 & 2 in the semifinals to advance to the finals knowing all the women would be cheering on each other on no matter what.

“I had a great time with the groups I played with,” Huser said. “They are really supportive, respectful, and fun to golf with. I just had a great time.”

Huser who was sitting 111 points behind Jesup’s Michelle Klein for IGA Senior Women’s Player of the year knew very little about her standing prior to the event. With the win, she surpassed Klein for the top spot in 2024.

“Well considering having to ask what player points are it is a new experience for me,” Huser said. “But just being able to play competitive golf also with other women just adds that much more.”

Huser beat Kathy Fortune of Rockwell City 3 & 2 to advance to the semifinals.

Kelly Grimes of Mitchellville defeated Council Bluff’s Shirly Rochelle 6 & 5 to claim the Presidents Bracket Champion. Grimes kept a smile on her face and had the best time she commented.

“I did not play very great, but I always love playing with these gals,” Grimes said. “I enjoyed the course, it was a nice course to play on and I had a great time.”

Grimes beat Sue Harmon of Slater 1 up in the quarterfinals and Nevada’s Carroll Dethrow to advance to the finals.
