The headline read “Little Miss Iowa Looms as Coming Star in Golfdom.”  The subject was 12-year-old Edith Estabrooks of Dubuque who had played her way to the quarterfinals of the Iowa Women’s Amateur Championship in 1933.  Two years later she won her first of four State titles taking the trophy in 1935, 36, 37 and 39.

Estabrooks prowess on the golf course also manifested itself nationally at the Western Girl’s Junior which she won in 1936 at age 15 at the famed Oakland Hills CC in Detroit.

Still a teenager, Edith went on to a runner-up finish in the Women’s Western Amateur in 1938 losing to a future LPGA and USGA champion, the great Patty Berg.  In 1939, Estabrooks returned to Oakland Hills to win the Women’s Western. In the 36-hole match play final she defeated Ellamae Williams of Chicago 8 & 6 which was the largest winning margin in the 39 year history of the championship.
