Peters/Coppinger cruise to victory at IGA Senior Four-Ball, Norton/Waugh claim Super Senior crown

Ben Peters, of Bettendorf, and Chad Coppinger, of Blue Grass (above), coasted their way to a victory at the Senior Four-Ball Championship contested at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown. The duo teamed up for round of 64-67, good enough for a four-shot win.

“Fortunately we both were not in too much trouble on the same hole and we only made one bogey in 36-holes,” Peters said. “We were like ham and egg.”

Coppinger knew birdies would be needed.

“We did not really have a strategy, just make as many birdies as we could,” Coppinger said.

The two of them did just that. Over the two rounds Peters/Coppinger dominated the field and racked up a staggering ten birdies to finish at 131 (-9).

Making a late charge in the final round, after posting 70 (even) on day one, to climb up the leaderboard and finish runner-up was Terry Cook, of Norwalk, and David Blink, of Spencer. Cook/Brink shot an impressive 65 (-5). There was a four-way tie for third at 137 (-3).

In the Super Senior Division Muscatine’s Tom Norton and Dave Waugh, of Davenport, played their own game and it paid off.

“Historically we have not wanted to let each other down,  so you put more pressure on yourself than you should,” Norton said. “Our game plan was to play our own ball, do the best we could, not be discouraged and we did just that.”

Norton/Waugh played solid and carded a score of 69 (-1) both days to end at 138 (-2).

“Tom came through, he was rock solid the last nine holes,” Waugh said.

Finishing runner-up were Marshalltown’s own Rob Christensen and Jim Madsen, of Carroll. Christensen/Madsen shot 139 (-1). Two shots behind them was Dan Dalziel, of Cedar Rapids, and Steve Kahler, of Marion.

The father-son duo, Pat and Jim Roan (right) still showed the field the two can still compete. Pat and Jim combined for an age of 157 and finished in the Super Senior Division in solo 13th at 158 (+18).

Huser captures 1st IGA Senior Women’s Match Play crown

Geri Huser (right), of Altoona, sealed the deal at the 1st IGA Senior Women’s Match Play at Whispering Creek Golf Club in Sioux City defeating West Des Moines’ Nicki Miller 3 & 2 in a back and forth match before Huser pulled away with wins on holes #13-16 to win.

Huser admitted she had to think outside of the box on her road to the finals.

“I think the course was set up really well for both the men and women to play at the same time,” Huser said. “You had to placement shots throughout the course on a lot of different holes, and I think that is important when you have senior women playing. It makes it a lot more fun.”

Huser beat Dubuques’ Rose Kubesheski 4 & 2 in the semifinals to advance to the finals knowing all the women would be cheering on each other on no matter what.

“I had a great time with the groups I played with,” Huser said. “They are really supportive, respectful, and fun to golf with. I just had a great time.”

Huser who was sitting 111 points behind Jesup’s Michelle Klein for IGA Senior Women’s Player of the year knew very little about her standing prior to the event. With the win, she surpassed Klein for the top spot in 2024.

“Well considering having to ask what player points are it is a new experience for me,” Huser said. “But just being able to play competitive golf also with other women just adds that much more.”

Huser beat Kathy Fortune of Rockwell City 3 & 2 to advance to the semifinals.

Kelly Grimes of Mitchellville defeated Council Bluff’s Shirly Rochelle 6 & 5 to claim the Presidents Bracket Champion. Grimes kept a smile on her face and had the best time she commented.

“I did not play very great, but I always love playing with these gals,” Grimes said. “I enjoyed the course, it was a nice course to play on and I had a great time.”

Grimes beat Sue Harmon of Slater 1 up in the quarterfinals and Nevada’s Carroll Dethrow to advance to the finals.

Anderson wins 22nd IGA Senior Match Play, Norton collects Super Senior title

J.D. Anderson (right), of Johnston, secured his first Senior Division win at the 22nd IGA Senior Match Play against Curtis Holck, of Ankeny, winning 4 & 3 at Whispering Creek Golf Club in Sioux City.

Anderson admitted he had to shift his thought process as he won his semifinals match to get into the finals.

“The course played different between today and yesterday the wind switched,” Anderson said. “You got used to some yardages but you had to adjust. My strategy really knowing that there are not a lot of birdies out here when it is this windy was to just not make big numbers”.

Anderson, who defeated West Des Moines’ Chris Kramer on the 18th hole to win the match at 1 up. In the afternoon finals Anderson had his foot on the gas from the get go. Anderson won the first three holes and never looked back.

“I made a ton of my six footers today, that just kept me in it, kept me on top and got me the win,” Anderson added.

Anderson received a bye in the round of 32, in the Round of 16 defeated Bob Brummel, of Orange City in 19 holes, and in the quarterfinals topped Sioux City local Lance Heimsoth 2 & 1.

In one of the Super Senior Division semifinal matches, a repeat of the 21st IGA Senior Match Play final, saw Muscatine resident Tom Norton and Dave Gaer of Des Moines lock horns.

But, this time Tom Norton claimed the victory in 20 holes to advance to the finals.

“I knew the match against Dave was going to be really challenging, he is a very good player and it was all that I expected and then some,” Norton said.

The wind seemed to be a recurring theme players had to take into consideration during matches.

“Wind is always a factor,” Norton said of his matches. “The IGA always does a great job of setting courses up. I always feel like it is going to be fair, it isn’t going to be easy, but it is going to be fair.”

Norton (right) would go on to defeat Bill Mathers of Correctionville 4 & 2. Mathers, who defeated Kevin Welte 3 &2 to reach the finals, played well all week and won several of his matches in dominating fashion.

Norton’s road to the finals was dominating as well, he would receive a bye in the Round of 32, defeat Des Moines’ Charlie Taylor 4 & 2 in the Round of 16 and defeat another Des Moines resident Dan Trerotola 5 & 4 before meeting Gaer in the semifinals.
