Voke storms back to win 68th Herman Sani Tournament

You would expect a Cyclone to storm back.

New Zeland’s Nick Voke (pictured above), who just completed his eligibility at Iowa State University this spring, stormed back to win the 68th Herman Sani Tournament at Echo Valley Country Club.

Voke, who posted an impressive 66 (-5) in the final round,  shot 204 (-9) over the three-day event to win by three over former teammate Denzel Ieremia.

“I struck the ball pretty well all week,” Voke said. “I did a little bit of work before today’s round trying to get the speed of the greens.”

Voke admitted that he didn’t even play a practice round, let alone have any prior experience at EVCC.

“I walked the course before round one,” Voke said. “I had a good gameplan and was able to come away with (the win).”

Voke birdied three of the last four holes to pull away.

“I was able to make a nice putt on #17,” Voke said. “Then I made a seven-footer on #18 to finish.”

In the Senior Division Joe Palmer, who won the Senior Division in 2013, made birdie on the last hole to take home the title by a shot over Curtis Holck and Rob Dickerman.

Palmer finished at 210 (-3) for the event.

Billmeyer takes medal at U.S. Senior Am qualifying

Sam Billmeyer (pictured at left above, with USGA Senior Amateur Committee member John Webb), of Ankeny, shot a 2-under 70 on Monday at the Briarwood Golf Club in Ankeny to earn the lone qualifying spot into the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.  Billmeyer moves on to play the national event August 26-31 at The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Billmeyer, who played in the first group out, didn’t get off to a great start, but closed with a flourish.  After a birdie at 3, he made bogey at 5, 6 & 9 to turn at 2-over par 38.  But then he tore up the back nine, firing a 4-under 32 with birdies at 10, 12, 14 and 16 against no bogeys.  That run was good enough for a one shot win over Joe Palmer of West Des Moines.

Palmer is the 1st alternate while Tom Norton, of Muscatine, is the 2nd alternate.  Norton shot even-par 72.

Snyder captures 93rd Iowa Women’s Amateur title

Gilbert’s Britta Snyder (pictured above) left little doubt early on in the final round of the 93rd Iowa Women’s Amateur who would be hoisting the trophy at the end of the day. Her lead extended to 10 strokes after the first hole today at Hyperion Field Club and she never looked back.

“It was nice to make a putt (for par) on one and get some momentum going,” Snyder said. “I didn’t want to start with a bogey.”

Snyder, 15, who posted 73 (+1) to finish the championship at even par, became the youngest winner of the Iowa Women’s Amateur since Edith Estabrooks who won the tournament as a 14 and 15 year-old in the 1930s.

“I think sticking to my game plan worked,” Snyder said. “I didn’t very many drivers. I just tried to hit fairways and keep it under the hole on these greens. Today, I just hit a lot of shots to the middle of the green and two putted from there. It was boring, but good golf.

Adding her name to the Fladoos Trophy, brought a smile to her face after the final round.

“It feels pretty cool to win a tournament with such special history,” Snyder said. “I’m excited (to have won).”

Finishing in the tie for runner-up were Leanne Smith and first round leader Maddie Bartsch who both posted 229 (+13) for the three-day event.

In the Open Division, Janece Schwartzkopf held off Kari Manning to win by a single stroke.

Snyder sticks to the plan, takes commanding lead at 93rd Iowa Women’s Amateur

Britta Snyder (pictured above), of Gilbert, knew she left more than a few shots out there yesterday during the 93rd Iowa Woman’s Amateur at Hyperion Field Club.

Today, she didn’t.

Snyder fired a sizzling 70 (-2) to take the lead by seven shots over opening round leader Maddie Bertsch. Snyder made a total of four birdies, all on the front nine (her second nine holes of the day).

“I made some putts today,” Snyder said. “Going into today I wanted to be under par, it’s out there on this course. It’s a challenge (out here), but you know there are birdie opportunities out there. I wanted to finish strong. I had a double bogey yesterday (on #4) and almost birdied that hole today. It was just a matter of figuring out a few things.”

The game plan for Snyder won’t change she said, no matter how big of a cushion she may have entering the final round.

“That doesn’t change (my mindset),” Snyder said. “(Today) I wanted to get the lead and increase it. I want to stick to my game plan, step on the gas and hopefully get the win.”

Sitting just a shot back of Bertsch in the race for the top three is a trio of players including Allison Olberding, Paige Van Dyk and Leanne Smith.

In the Open Division Kari Manning leads followed closely by several golfers looking to make a move in tomorrow’s final round.
