Meet Julie

Julie Buerman has taken every opportunity available to support women’s golf in Iowa and representing this fundraiser is just one more. Julie has supported women’s golf through her roles as a player, coach, committee member, and former board member. As a player, Julie played collegiate golf at Luther College. After her college days, Julie transitioned to serving the game of golf through being a high school golf coach at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids. Julie coached high school golf for over 20 years, but her service to the game does not end there. While coaching, Julie served on the Iowa Women’s Golf Association board for three years. For the IGA, Julie served on the 100th Women’s Amateur Committee, is the Chair of the Women’s Rules and Competitions Committee, and is a member of the Ann Griffel Scholarship Committee. Additionally, Julie has kept her coaching skills sharp by leading Team Iowa in the Girls’ Four-State Championship the last seven years.

Not only is Julie a member of the Ann Griffel Scholarship Committee, but she is a Griffel Scholar herself. Julie knows what it takes to be a Griffel Scholar and gets to help select the next class each year.

Julie shares her excitement for the fundraiser stating, “As a former Griffel recipient, I am excited to be able to give back and support fundraising this year to support our Iowa golfers in their college pursuit.”

About the Fundraiser

Julie has committed to playing 100 holes of competitive golf in support of the Ann Griffel Scholarship fund. Rounds must be played in sanctioned tournaments, such as IGA events, college events, club championships, or other state association events to count towards the 100-hole goal. The Ann Griffel scholarship is a $2,000 scholarship given to five deserving Iowa high school seniors each year who plan to continue on to higher education at an Iowa institution.

The scholarship honors Ann Griffel, an individual who changed the women’s golf scene in Iowa forever. Griffel served as president of the Iowa Women’s Golf Association for 23 years. During that time, Ann led the charge to start new tournaments such as the Iowa Junior Girls’ Amateur, the Iowa Wife-Husband, the Forever 39 Match Play, and the Iowa Senior Women’s Amateur. Griffel enjoyed competing in some of these events herself as she was a three-time champion of the Forever 39 Match Play and an eleven-time champion of the Iowa Senior Women’s Amateur. The legacy of Ann Griffel will never be lost upon Iowa golf through the events she created and the scholarship in her honor.
